Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has said that the next President of Nigeria should come from the Southern region, calling for fairness, competence, and national unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Politics Today on Channels Television on Thursday night, Amaechi stressed that Nigeria’s democracy cannot thrive if leadership continues to be dominated by one part of the country.
“Nigeria belongs to all of us,” Amaechi said. “We cannot sustain a democracy where one region dominates while others are locked out. The South has capable leaders. It’s time to restore balance and deliver real results.”
While advocating for Southern leadership, the former minister also emphasized that competence and character — not just regional rotation should determine who becomes president.
According to him, the coming election will not be about political parties, but a contest between ordinary Nigerians and the entrenched political elite.
“This election is no longer about party loyalty. It is Nigerians versus the political elite,” he said. “If you want change, real change, then it’s time to rise. The South is ready to lead.”
Amaechi concluded by saying efforts are ongoing to build a national platform that gives every Nigerian a voice and restores public trust in leadership.
