The 15th edition of the Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) officially starts today in Morocco, after being postponed from 2024 due to a busy football calendar. This tournament is the 13th official WAFCON competition.
The WAFCON began in 1998 when Mrs. Mariam Abacha donated the first trophy and Nigeria hosted the inaugural tournament. Before that, there were home-and-away qualifiers in 1991 and 1995 to select Africa’s representative for the FIFA Women’s World Cup, with Nigeria winning both times and being recognized as continental champions.
Nigeria’s Super Falcons are the most successful team in the competition’s history, having won nine WAFCON titles and crowned African champions 11 times overall. This year’s campaign is themed “Mission X,” as the Super Falcons aim to win their tenth WAFCON crown.
Representing Nigeria at the trophy unveiling were star players Asisat Oshoala and Rasheedat Ajibade, symbolizing the team’s strong ambition ahead of the competition.
The tournament is set to showcase the best women’s football talents across Africa, continuing the growth and popularity of the women’s game on the continent.
