Super Falcons forward Omorinsola Babajide dedicated her goal in Nigeria’s 3-0 win over Tunisia to the late Liverpool striker Diogo Jota and his brother. The match took place on Sunday at Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca during the first round of group games at WAFCON 2024.

Babajide had an outstanding performance, setting up Asisat Oshoala’s early opener in the 4th minute and scoring Nigeria’s second goal on the stroke of halftime in the 45th minute. This marked her first goal at a Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, achieved in just her fifth appearance for the nine-time champions.

Speaking after the game, she said: “It was for Diogo Jota and his brother as well. That was like one of his biggest celebrations at the club… We call it the signature celebration really.”

After hijacking the ball from Tunisia’s defence, Babajide used Jota’s trademark celebration — covering her face with both hands to remember the late footballer, who died recently in a car accident along with his brother. The tribute caught the attention of football fans worldwide.

Babajide faces tough competition for her place, as coach Randy Waldrum can choose from strong options like Esther Okoronkwo and Chiwendu Ihezuo. Okoronkwo came on after the break, provided a key assist, and was named Woman of the Match, while Ihezuo also found the net.
