Tinubu’s BRICS Trip Behind U.S. Visa Slash – Bashir Ahmad

The United States has announced tighter visa rules for Nigerian citizens, limiting most tourist and business visas to a single entry valid for just three months. The new policy, which takes effect from July 8, 2025, replaces the previous 5-year multiple-entry visa often issued to Nigerians.

The U.S. says the move is a response to Nigeria’s own short-term visa policies for American citizens — a principle known as reciprocity. However, former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad believes there’s more behind the decision.

Reacting on social media platform X, Ahmad said the decision may be linked to Nigeria’s growing ties with BRICS nations and President Bola Tinubu’s recent participation in the BRICS Summit in Brazil.

“I am of the opinion that the recent review of U.S. visa policy on Nigeria is not solely about reciprocity,” Ahmad wrote. “Rather, it appears to reflect growing U.S. discomfort with Nigeria’s increasing global realignment, particularly the warm reception we are receiving from the BRICS.”

He added that Nigeria is “forging strategic partnerships that serve our national interest,” and described Tinubu’s BRICS outing as a “strong message” to the West.
