Rumours that Nigerian football star Asisat Oshoala has retired from international football have been dismissed as false, just hours before the Super Falcons’ crucial Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) semi-final clash with South Africa.
The rumour spread quickly on social media on Monday, with several users claiming the Barcelona striker had quit the national team.
But former Super Eagles media officer, Colin Udoh, quickly shut down the story, saying there was no official announcement from Oshoala or the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).
“Everything was sketchy from the beginning,” Udoh said in a video shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account.
“Asisat is too smart to make that kind of announcement the day before such an important match. It wasn’t on her official pages either.”
Udoh added that when Oshoala eventually decides to retire, she will do so properly and officially.
“Whatever you’ve seen today is just a rumour. Ignore it,” he said.
Oshoala, 29, is one of Nigeria’s most decorated female footballers, with multiple African Women’s Player of the Year awards and appearances at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. She remains a key part of the Super Falcons squad currently chasing a 12th WAFCON title.
The Super Falcons will face **South Africa’s Banyana Banyana** on Tuesday in the semi-final of the tournament.
