Nigeria’s Super Falcons have advanced to the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) after defeating defending champions South Africa 2–1 in a tense semi-final clash.
The match, played on Tuesday evening, saw the Falcons dominate early with strong chances from Chiwendu Ihezuo and Esther Okoronkwo. In the 11th minute, Ashleigh Plumptre set up Ihezuo with a brilliant pass, but South Africa’s goalkeeper, Andile Dlamini, made a top-class save. Dlamini was again called into action one minute later to deny Okoronkwo.
Despite South Africa’s control in midfield, they struggled to create real chances against Nigeria’s solid defence, anchored by goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie.
Just before halftime, the Super Falcons were awarded a penalty after a handball by Bomgeka Gamede. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade stepped up and coolly scored, giving Nigeria a 1–0 lead at the break.
South Africa equalised in the 60th minute after Linda Motlhalo converted a penalty, setting up a tense final half-hour.
But the Falcons had the final say. In stoppage time, Nigeria’s right-back fired in a stunning long-range goal to seal a dramatic 2–1 victory.
The win sends Nigeria into the WAFCON final once again, as they aim to reclaim the title they last won in 2018.
The Super Falcons remain the most successful team in WAFCON history, and this victory adds another memorable chapter to their legacy.
