Former Labour Party presidential candidate and ex-Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has vowed to return to Edo State despite threats from the state governor, Monday Okpebholo, warning him to stay away.
Obi made the statement on Thursday while speaking with journalists in Awka, Anambra State. He had just visited his alma mater, Christ the King College (CKC), Onitsha, where he donated ₦50 million alongside other old students of the school.
Governor Okpebholo had earlier warned that Obi’s safety could not be guaranteed if he visited the state again. This followed Obi’s recent trip to Benin, where he made donations to a medical institution.
But Obi has shrugged off the threat, saying he is used to receiving threats across Nigeria and will not stop investing in people or visiting any part of the country.
“Threats don’t mean anything to me. I receive threats every day. If I have the opportunity to go to Benin and make donations again, trust me, I will,” Obi stated firmly.
He criticized Governor Okpebholo’s comments, saying the governor should have shown appreciation rather than issue threats.
“What the governor should have done is to complement what I was doing in his state instead of threatening me. He should be sincerely grateful,” Obi said.
Obi explained that his focus is on education, health, and poverty reduction, and that wealthy Nigerians should use their resources to support society, not just play politics.
He said the ₦50 million donation to CKC was a response to the school’s need for staff quarters and administrative buildings. He urged other well-meaning Nigerians to give back to schools and communities through honest means.
“I say it every day, those who have verifiable, honest means of livelihood should invest in schools, in health, and help lift people out of poverty,” he said.
Obi added that he would continue visiting schools and making donations across Nigeria, despite any threats or opposition.
