A founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former Minister of Information, Professor Jerry Gana, has revealed that the party is making moves to bring back former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an interview on AIT on Friday, Gana said talks are ongoing not just with Obi, but also with other key figures who left the PDP before the 2023 elections.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, left the PDP in May 2022 and joined the Labour Party, where he emerged as the party’s presidential candidate. He went on to secure third place in the February 2023 presidential election, gaining strong support, especially among the youth.
When asked if the PDP had approached Obi for a possible return, Gana responded, “Why not?” He added that discussions are already in motion and that he believes many former members would return once the party proves it is now stronger and better organized.
“Obi is not the only person,” Gana said. “We are also reaching out to others. But I won’t mention names until the time is right.”
According to Gana, the PDP has rebuilt its platform and is now better positioned to reclaim power. He believes that with unity and reconciliation, the party can mount a strong challenge in 2027.
Gana, who also contested the 2019 presidential election under the Social Democratic Party (SDP), is one of several senior PDP leaders pushing for a broader coalition to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in future elections.
