Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Sowore, on Wednesday arrived at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja carrying a packed travel bag, following a police summons over allegations of forgery and criminal defamation.
The police invitation, dated August 5, came from the office of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Monitoring Unit, asking Sowore to report for questioning.
In a bold move, Sowore showed up around 12:16 p.m., accompanied by his legal team – A.K. Musa and Marshal Abubakar — and a crowd of supporters chanting anti-government songs. His travel bag contained personal essentials such as soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, books, and clothes, symbolizing his readiness for possible arrest or detention.
Ahead of his appearance, Sowore had taken to social media, calling on “revolutionary comrades, citizens of conscience, and voices of resistance” to stand with him as he honoured the police summons.
The activist, known for his strong opposition to government policies and leadership, has had several run-ins with security agencies in the past, particularly over his involvement in protests and calls for reforms.
As of the time of this report, the police had not issued any official statement on the outcome of Sowore’s visit.
