Popular Nigerian activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore, has been released by the police after spending 48 hours in detention.
Sowore, known for his strong stance on human rights and democracy, was released around 8pm on Friday. His release came two days after he was detained by the police on Wednesday, following an invitation he honoured.
While still in custody, Sowore spoke to newsmen and alleged that the police denied him medical attention, despite having a broken hand.
Shortly after his release, Sowore went live on Facebook to inform Nigerians. He said, “I have just been released by the police. We told them they couldn’t sustain this, but they refused to listen. I was held for 48 hours by the illegal IGP and his people.”
Sowore’s arrest has sparked fresh conversations about police handling of political activists in Nigeria, especially as he has faced multiple arrests in the past due to his criticism of government policies.
The police have not yet released an official statement explaining the reason for his latest detention.
