The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has clarified that its recent operation in Abeokuta was aimed at internet fraudsters, not the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) as some reports suggested.
The commission made the clarification on Thursday via its official X (formerly Twitter) account, saying the raid was based on solid intelligence about a group of suspected internet fraudsters holding a party at a hotel located within the OOPL premises.
According to the EFCC, 93 suspects were arrested during the sting operation, which took place during a pool party reportedly organised to celebrate their online fraud activities. The party was initially planned for two different venues before being moved to the OOPL hotel in an attempt to evade law enforcement.
The EFCC stressed that the library itself was not the focus of the operation. “The target was the suspects, not the facility,” the commission stated.
Out of the 93 arrested, 23 will be arraigned on Friday, August 15, 2025, before Justice D. Dipeolu of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos. The suspects face charges related to impersonation, identity theft, and other forms of internet fraud. Most of them, according to EFCC, have already confessed.
The commission added that the remaining suspects will be charged in batches as investigations continue.
The EFCC has been ramping up its efforts to crack down on cybercrime, particularly among young Nigerians involved in “Yahoo Yahoo” scams.
