Lagos APC Denies Political Link to Councillors’ Deaths

The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has denied rumours linking the recent deaths of two female councillors in the state to political causes. The party described such claims as unfounded, insensitive, and harmful to public trust.

The two councillors, Oluwakemi Rufai and Zainab Shotayo, died within a few days of each other, sparking widespread speculation across social media and political circles. Many Nigerians expressed concern over the timing of the deaths, especially since both women had only recently taken office after the local government elections.

Oluwakemi Rufai represented Ward C1 in Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area, while Zainab Shotayo was the only female councillor in Odiolowo-Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area in Ilupeju. The fact that both were women and died less than a month into their new roles led to rumours that the deaths may have had political undertones or were linked to internal party struggles.

However, the Lagos APC Publicity Secretary, Seye Oladejo, has strongly rejected these claims. Speaking in an official statement, Oladejo said there was no evidence to suggest that politics had anything to do with the unfortunate incidents.

“It was reported that they were indisposed. Their deaths had nothing to do with politics,” he stated. “Wherever such insinuations are coming from demeans humanity if properly considered. Death is inevitable, and it can occur at any time, in any profession or sector.”

Oladejo also warned against using such tragic events for political gain or mischief. He urged the public to respect the families of the deceased and allow them to mourn in peace.

“It is both unfair and inhumane to politicise the deaths of these women. We should remember that these are people’s daughters, wives, mothers, and sisters,” he said.

The Lagos APC used the opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to women’s participation in politics. Oladejo noted that the party had taken deliberate steps over the years to promote gender inclusivity and empower women within the political system.

“Our women occupy key positions at various levels of government. There is a deliberate policy to allocate a substantial number of seats to women across the board,” he explained.

He questioned how a party that has consistently promoted gender inclusion could be accused of being hostile to female politicians.

“How then can anyone allege that a party with such policies is against women?” he asked.

The party spokesperson maintained that the APC in Lagos would continue to support women in leadership roles and ensure they are well represented in both elective and appointive positions.

Despite the party’s assurances, some members of the public and civil society have called for a deeper investigation into the circumstances surrounding the councillors’ deaths. While there is no official evidence suggesting foul play, the coincidence of two female councillors dying within such a short period has raised eyebrows.

Groups advocating for women in politics have expressed concern about the safety and welfare of female politicians in Nigeria, noting that they often face more challenges than their male counterparts.

In response, political analysts have pointed out that Nigeria’s political space is often hostile to women due to longstanding gender biases, lack of support structures, and, in some cases, threats to personal safety. They argue that every incident that affects women in politics must be taken seriously to build public confidence.

However, in the absence of clear evidence of wrongdoing, many also agree that it is important not to jump to conclusions.

The Lagos APC has called on the public and the media to show greater sensitivity when dealing with such matters. The party insists that turning personal tragedies into political speculation serves no useful purpose and only adds to the pain of grieving families.

“Let us mourn with those who mourn and avoid creating unnecessary controversy where none exists,” Oladejo concluded.

The party expressed condolences to the families of the late councillors and praised their contributions to grassroots development, saying their short time in office left a positive impact in their respective communities.
