The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has announced a major shake-up in its leadership and workforce, with the promotion of 3,514 officers and the appointment of four Deputy Comptroller-Generals (DCGs) and 12 Assistant Comptroller-Generals (ACGs).

The decision was made during the 63rd regular meeting of the Nigeria Customs Service Board (NCSB), chaired by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, held on Tuesday.

The NCSB said the changes are aimed at strengthening leadership capacity, improving service delivery, and aligning Customs operations with national economic priorities.

The Board confirmed the appointment of the following as Deputy Comptroller-Generals (DCGs):

In addition to the DCGs, the Board also appointed the following 12 Assistant Comptroller-Generals (ACGs):

These senior officers are expected to provide strategic leadership and ensure Customs operations run efficiently across all zones.

In addition to the appointments, the Board approved the promotion of 3,312 senior officers from the rank of Comptroller of Customs (CC) to Assistant Superintendent of Customs II (ASC II).

At a separate meeting—the 6th Management Meeting of the Nigeria Customs Service, held on Friday, August 29, 2025—the Customs Management also approved the promotion of 202 junior officers, ranging from Assistant Inspector of Customs (AIC) to Customs Assistant I (CA I).

This brings the total number of promotions to 3,514 officers across all levels of the Service.

According to the NCS, the promotions were carried out to reward excellence, hard work, and loyalty, and to enhance overall productivity within the Service.

Speaking after the meeting, a spokesperson for the Board said the latest appointments and promotions reflect the Service’s commitment to merit-based advancement, equitable representation, and effective service delivery.

“These changes are not just routine; they are strategic,” the spokesperson said. “We are aligning Customs operations with the federal government’s broader economic goals, particularly in the areas of revenue generation, border security, and trade facilitation.”

The Board also highlighted that all appointments were made transparently and in strict compliance with federal policies.

This is the first major reform within the Nigeria Customs Service under the direct leadership of Wale Edun, since he took over as Finance Minister and Chairman of the Nigeria Customs Service Board.

Under his leadership, the NCS is expected to play a more active role in supporting President Bola Tinubu’s economic reform agenda, especially in terms of non-oil revenue generation, anti-smuggling efforts, and modernization of Customs procedures.

With over 3,500 officers promoted and new leadership at the helm, the Nigeria Customs Service is expected to intensify border operations, enhance revenue collection, and adopt new technologies to ease trade and improve transparency.
