Chief Akpa was abducted on Monday while returning from a traditional council meeting held in Abejukolo, the administrative headquarters of Omala Local Government Area (LGA). The incident occurred near the Ojuwo Ugweche community, throwing residents into panic and prompting a manhunt by security agencies.
The Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP William Ovye-Aya, confirmed the monarch’s rescue in a statement issued on Thursday in Lokoja.
“Security operatives, responding swiftly to the distress call about the abduction, have successfully rescued the traditional ruler unhurt from his abductors in a forest,” Ovye-Aya stated.
He disclosed that the rescue mission was a combined operation involving the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, local hunters, and vigilante groups, who combed the forests around the region to track down the kidnappers.
SP Ovye-Aya further explained that the traditional ruler was rescued without paying any ransom and is in good health. He is expected to reunite with his family soon.
“The District Head will soon be united with his family. He is safe and in good condition,” the statement noted.
In addition, the Chief Press Secretary to the Chairman of Omala LGA, Mr. Gift Idoga, confirmed that the monarch was presently receiving medical attention at the residence of the Local Government Chairman.
“The District Head who was rescued today is currently at the residence of the Chairman of Omala LGA receiving treatment,” he said.
The Kogi State Police Command assured residents of its ongoing efforts to flush out criminal elements across the state, particularly in rural areas where kidnappings and armed attacks have become a growing concern.
“The operation is still ongoing. We are determined to make Kogi State unsafe for all criminals and their sponsors,” Ovye-Aya added.
He also urged residents to continue supporting security agencies by providing useful information and promptly reporting suspicious movements.
Kogi State has in recent months seen a rise in isolated cases of kidnapping and banditry, especially in areas bordering neighbouring states. However, security agencies have ramped up operations in forests and border communities to contain the threat.
The rescue of the Bagaji-Odo district head is being seen as a boost to public confidence in the ability of security forces to respond effectively to threats against lives and property.
