Obasa Hints at 2027 Governorship Bid

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, has dropped a strong hint that he may run for governor in 2027, even as he ruled out returning for a fifth term as a legislator.

Speaking during an interview on Television Continental (TVC) on Thursday, Obasa said he is seriously considering moving beyond the House of Assembly, where he has served for many years, and may contest for a higher position, including the governorship, depending on the direction of his political party.

The Speaker, who has been a key figure in Lagos politics for over two decades, revealed that while he has personal political ambitions, he remains loyal to the leadership and structure of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).

“Every politician has ambitions,” Obasa said. “But you get to a stage where you cannot determine what comes next. If you believe in the party structure, you understand that it’s about consultation, consensus, and the leadership’s direction.”

He added that although the idea of contesting for Senate or governorship has been on his mind, such a decision cannot be made in isolation from the wider goals of the APC.

Obasa’s latest comments follow earlier statements where he suggested that having served as a councillor, lawmaker, and Speaker, the logical next steps in his political journey would be either the Senate or the Lagos State Government House.

However, he was clear during the interview that returning to the Lagos Assembly in 2027 is unlikely.

Asked directly if he would seek re-election to the Assembly for a fifth term, the Speaker responded, “Not really,” indicating that his political focus may soon shift towards new responsibilities.

This revelation is significant given Obasa’s long tenure and recent political battles. Just months ago, he survived a brief leadership crisis that saw him temporarily removed as Speaker before regaining his position. His ability to bounce back has been seen by many analysts as a sign of his strong political base within the party.

Obasa currently represents Agege Constituency 1 and has served as Speaker since 2015. Under his leadership, the Lagos Assembly has passed several key laws, including ones related to security, transportation, and urban development. His tenure has not been without controversy, but he remains one of the most influential lawmakers in the state.

Political watchers believe that Obasa’s potential entry into the 2027 governorship race could shake up the current permutations within the APC, especially as the party begins early preparations for the next electoral cycle.

If he does throw his hat in the ring, Obasa would join a growing list of Lagos politicians believed to be eyeing the governorship position, currently held by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who is expected to complete his second term by 2027.

However, Obasa was careful not to declare outright that he will run for governor. Instead, he stressed that any decision about his next political move will be made in line with the views of his party’s leadership.

“It’s not about personal ambition alone,” he said. “It’s about what the party wants, what the people want, and what direction will help us move Lagos forward.”
