Herdsman, 36 Cows Killed in Renewed Plateau Attack

Tension has again gripped Plateau State following a renewed attack in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area that left a herdsman and 36 of his cattle dead. The incident occurred on Monday in Ndinn village, Fan District, in what local sources described as an unprovoked assault by unidentified gunmen.

The attack adds to a string of violent incidents that have plagued Plateau State in recent months, particularly in rural areas where farmers and herders often clash over land, grazing routes, and ethnic tensions.

According to residents, the latest killing reflects the growing insecurity in the area and the government’s inability to protect vulnerable communities. Locals expressed deep frustration, saying that despite repeated attacks in recent weeks, no meaningful arrests have been made by security agencies.

A community source said, “We are living in fear. The attackers come, kill, and disappear. No one is arrested. It has become a norm.”

Muhammad Saidu, Coordinator of the Fulbe Youth Development Association (FUYODA), Riyom Chapter, issued a strong condemnation of the attack in a statement released on Wednesday.

“This is a heartbreaking reminder of the persistent insecurity and injustice faced by peaceful Fulani communities in Plateau,” Saidu said.

He called on security agencies and the government to urgently investigate the incident and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

“We strongly condemn this act of violence and call on the relevant authorities to ensure that justice is served,” he added.

Saidu also prayed for the soul of the deceased herder, identified as Abubakar Alhaji Woda, and comfort for his grieving family.

“May Almighty Allah grant Abubakar Alhaji Woda Jannatul Firdaus, forgive his shortcomings, and comfort his family during this difficult time,” he said.

As of press time, neither the Plateau State Government nor any security agency had issued an official statement regarding the incident.

In recent years, Plateau State has experienced recurring violence between farming and pastoral communities, often driven by land disputes, ethnic tensions, and competition over resources. Despite various government interventions and peace-building efforts, attacks continue, fueling mistrust and fear among different groups.

Community leaders are now urging authorities to step up security presence in rural areas and ensure that all citizens regardless of background are protected equally.
