The Lagos State Government has launched an investigation into allegations of financial misconduct involving a staff member of the Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency (LASAA), accused of diverting official payments into a personal bank account.
The probe began after a social media post went viral on X (formerly Twitter), where a user alleged that payments meant for LASAA were being made into an individual’s Opay account, instead of the agency’s official channels.
The whistleblower, identified as @Bhadmoz (TrueBlue), claimed that some customers were being charged ₦45,000, but were issued official receipts reflecting only ₦7,100 — suggesting that a large portion of the money was being diverted.
The user tagged Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, calling for urgent action to stop the alleged corruption.
In response to the online outcry, Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab confirmed that the person involved in the allegation is indeed a staff member of LASAA, which operates under his ministry.
He directed that the accused officer report immediately to LASAA’s headquarters to face disciplinary action and a formal investigation.
“My attention has been drawn to a post alleging improper transaction practices involving a staff member of an agency under our ministry. I have instructed that the officer appear at the agency’s head office tomorrow to face disciplinary proceedings,” Wahab said in a statement released on Wednesday.
The Commissioner stressed that the Lagos State Government maintains a strict stance against corruption and would not tolerate any form of unethical behaviour among public officials.
“Let this serve as a strong warning. The Lagos State Government has zero tolerance for corruption or misconduct. We commend vigilant citizens who help expose such acts because maintaining transparency is a collective duty,” he added.
Wahab also assured the public that any official found guilty would face appropriate sanctions, noting that the Sanwo-Olu administration is committed to accountability, integrity, and transparency in all government operations.
The revelation sparked widespread reactions on social media, with many Lagos residents commending the government’s swift response and urging a thorough investigation to restore public trust.
Some users called for a full audit of LASAA’s financial operations to ensure similar practices were not happening elsewhere in the agency. Others stressed the need for stronger monitoring systems and digital payment processes to prevent manipulation by individuals.
Sources within LASAA confirmed that the management has begun internal checks to verify the claims and identify any other possible irregularities in its payment system.
The Lagos State Signage and Advertisement Agency (LASAA) was established to regulate and control outdoor advertising and signage across the state. The agency ensures that all billboards, street posters, and business signs comply with safety and environmental standards.
LASAA also serves as a key revenue-generating agency for the state through the issuance of advertising permits and display licenses.
The ongoing probe aligns with the Lagos State Government’s broader campaign against corruption in public service. In recent months, the state has intensified internal monitoring to promote accountability and prevent abuse of office.
Governor Sanwo-Olu has repeatedly emphasized that public office is a trust that must be handled with transparency. The administration has also encouraged citizens to use official complaint channels and social media platforms to report suspicious activities by public servants.
As of press time, the accused staff member has been ordered to appear before a disciplinary panel, while investigators continue to gather evidence on the alleged diversion of funds.
The Lagos State Government has assured residents that the outcome of the probe will be made public, adding that anyone found guilty will face the full weight of the law.
