Brothers, Lady Die as Dangote Truck Crushes Motorcycle in Gboko

Three persons, including two brothers and a young lady, were crushed to death by a Dangote truck in Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State on Friday.

The fatal accident occurred at Luga, a suburb along the Gboko–Aliade Road, when a speeding Dangote truck rammed into a motorcycle carrying the victims.

Eyewitnesses said the three were on a Bajaj motorcycle when two Dangote trucks, reportedly driving side by side at high speed on the narrow road, approached from behind. One of the trucks, unable to avoid the motorcycle due to lack of space, hit it and crushed all three occupants instantly.

“The two trucks were moving very fast side by side. One could not steer away when it got to the motorcycle and hit it from behind. The impact was so strong that the three people died immediately,” an eyewitness said.

The victims were identified as brothers Orgem Ugondo and Aondozungwe Ugondo, both from Mbatan kindred in Mbayion, Gboko Local Government Area. The third victim, a young lady who was said to have been given a lift by the brothers on their way home, was yet to be identified as at press time.

Their bodies were later evacuated to a mortuary in Agidi, a nearby community, while the two Dangote trucks involved in the accident were taken to the police station in Gboko.

When contacted, the Chairman of the Gboko branch of Dantrans — the transport wing of Dangote Industries Limited — Mr. Adamu Alfa, confirmed the incident, describing it as “sad and unfortunate.”

He explained that although the accident occurred in Gboko, the trucks involved were attached to the Dangote Cement Plant in Ibese, Ogun State, and not the Gboko plant.

According to him, the Dangote Group has been holding regular safety sensitisation and orientation sessions for its drivers to promote responsible driving and reduce road accidents.

“The company takes safety seriously,” Alfa said. “We always remind our drivers to maintain discipline on the road and avoid speeding.”

Road accidents involving heavy-duty trucks remain a major concern across Nigerian highways, especially those operated by large transport fleets. Many communities along major routes like the Gboko–Aliade Road have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and better monitoring of truck drivers to prevent avoidable deaths.
