Former presidential candidate, Professor Kingsley Moghalu, has strongly denied reports linking him to the Labour Party (LP) as a candidate in the recently concluded Anambra State governorship election.

In a statement released on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, Moghalu described the reports as “false and lazy reporting,” noting that some media outlets had mistakenly used his photograph while identifying him as the LP flagbearer in the November 8, 2025 election.

“These reports are false, unfortunate and smack of lazy reporting, as they were apparently conflating Chief George Moghalu, who was the Labour Party candidate in the election, with me,” the former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Deputy Governor said.

Moghalu clarified that he is not a member of any political party, was not a participant in the Anambra governorship election, and has since quit active partisan politics. He recalled that he resigned from partisan politics in September 2022, ahead of the 2023 presidential election, and had previously contested as the Young Progressives Party (YPP) presidential candidate in 2019.

The controversy arose after several Nigerian newspapers and online platforms mistakenly reported that Moghalu was the Labour Party candidate in Anambra State. The erroneous reports have been widely circulated on social media, prompting reactions from readers who believed the former banker had joined the race.

Moghalu expressed disappointment at the misreporting, noting that it is important for journalists to verify information before publication. He urged all outlets that published the misleading stories to issue prompt corrections and retractions.

“The media has a duty to report facts accurately,” Moghalu said. “Confusing me with Chief George Moghalu is unacceptable. Such errors can mislead the public and affect perceptions about political events.”

The former presidential aspirant also highlighted that the confusion could have been avoided by proper fact-checking, given that he has publicly maintained his disengagement from partisan politics.

The Anambra State governorship election, which took place on November 8, 2025, drew significant attention across the country. The Labour Party candidate, Chief George Moghalu, was among several contenders vying for the state’s top office. However, several reports mistakenly attributed his candidacy to Professor Kingsley Moghalu, leading to widespread confusion.

Professor Moghalu’s career in public service and politics has been notable. He served as Deputy Governor of the CBN and has previously contested for the presidency under the YPP. Despite his political background, Moghalu has consistently stated that he stepped away from active party politics, focusing instead on advocacy, policy, and social development work.

In his statement, Moghalu called on Nigerians to verify facts before sharing news stories online and warned that continued misreporting could erode trust in the media. “I urge all journalists and media houses to correct the record,” he said, highlighting that factual reporting is essential for a healthy democracy.

The former presidential candidate also highlighted that his political disengagement allows him to serve Nigerians in non-partisan ways, contributing to national development and promoting good governance without being tied to any party agenda.

As Nigeria prepares for future elections at both state and federal levels, Moghalu’s call for accurate reporting is timely. Analysts argue that media credibility is essential in ensuring informed citizenry and peaceful democratic processes. The professor’s reaction highlights the responsibility of journalists to uphold accuracy, especially in the age of social media where misinformation spreads rapidly.

Professor Moghalu concluded by reiterating his non-partisan status and expressing hope that all media organizations that reported his alleged candidacy will promptly issue corrections to set the record straight. He called on Nigerians to verify facts independently and to avoid sharing unverified news that could distort public understanding of political events.
