Tension has gripped Orerokpe Community in Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State after a man identified as Rossy Omatseye was reportedly killed by the children and friends of his lover following a domestic dispute.
The tragic incident, which occurred on Monday, November 10, has left residents in shock and raised concerns about rising cases of violence in domestic relationships across the state.
According to community sources, Omatseye had an argument with his lover, whose name was not immediately disclosed. The disagreement reportedly became heated, prompting the woman’s children to intervene. When the children learned about the quarrel, they allegedly gathered their friends and stormed the deceased’s residence.
Eyewitnesses said the group attacked Omatseye with axes and other weapons, killing him on the spot before fleeing the scene. Efforts by neighbours to rescue him proved futile, as he was confirmed dead before help could reach him.
News of the incident quickly spread to Ekpan Community in Uvwie Local Government Area, where the deceased hailed from. Angered by the brutal killing, members of his family and friends reportedly mobilized themselves and headed to Orerokpe in an attempt to avenge his death.
This move, however, created panic and tension in both communities, as residents feared a possible outbreak of violent clashes between the two groups. Security operatives were immediately deployed to the area to prevent further violence.
Although the Delta State Police Command has not yet released an official statement, sources said officers from the Orerokpe Division have begun investigations to uncover the circumstances surrounding the murder. The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, was yet to confirm the incident as of the time of filing this report.
Community leaders have since called for calm, urging both sides to allow the police to handle the case lawfully. They warned against any form of retaliation, noting that such actions could escalate tensions and cause more harm.
Incidents like this have become increasingly common in some parts of Delta State, where domestic and relationship-related conflicts sometimes end in violence. Human rights advocates have consistently urged families to seek peaceful means of resolving disputes instead of taking the law into their own hands.
Residents of Orerokpe and Ekpan communities have appealed to the Delta State Government and security agencies to ensure justice is served and to put measures in place to prevent further bloodshed.
