Former Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, is alive and in good health, despite widespread rumours on social media on Friday claiming that he had passed away. The clarification came from his former Commissioner for Information, Mr. C. Don Adinuba, who dismissed the reports as false, misleading, and capable of causing unnecessary tension among the public.
The rumour, which circulated mainly on social media platforms and some blogs, alleged that the former governor died in the United Kingdom after a brief illness. The report quickly gained attention, prompting concern among many residents of Anambra State and political followers across the country. However, Adinuba stated that there was no truth in the story and urged Nigerians to disregard it completely.
Adinuba explained that he personally spoke with Chief Obiano on Friday to verify the claims, and the former governor confirmed that he was healthy and living his normal life. According to him, Obiano is not only alive but “hale and hearty” and currently residing in the United States, not the United Kingdom as claimed by the fake report.
“Obiano has never lived in the United Kingdom. He lives in the United States of America. I just spoke with him now,” Adinuba said, stressing that the rumour had no basis and was clearly the work of mischief-makers.
The circulation of death rumours about public figures has become common in Nigeria, especially during periods of political tension or inactivity. Such incidents often generate panic and confusion, leading to public calls for responsible information sharing. Adinuba warned that spreading unverified information, especially about someone’s health or death, can cause emotional distress to the person’s family, friends, and supporters.
He noted that Obiano’s family had already received numerous calls from concerned individuals trying to confirm the rumour. This, he said, was unfair and avoidable, especially when the claims lacked any official confirmation.
Chief Willie Obiano served as governor of Anambra State from 2014 to 2022 under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). His administration is remembered for its investments in security, agriculture, and infrastructure. After leaving office in March 2022, Obiano travelled to the United States, where he has been living quietly with his family.
The former governor has kept a low profile since leaving office, making him a frequent target of speculation. Friday’s rumour follows a pattern of false reports that have trailed several Nigerian political figures in recent years. Media analysts have repeatedly called for stricter fact-checking and more responsible use of social media to prevent the spread of misinformation.
Adinuba urged Nigerians to remain calm and always seek accurate information from credible sources. He emphasized that Obiano is in good health and going about his activities without any issues.
