President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s strong commitment to the welfare, professionalism, and operational effectiveness of the Nigerian Army, as the country continues to battle various security challenges across different regions.

The President made the pledge at the opening of the Chief of Army Annual Conference 2025, held in Lagos on Monday. He was represented at the event by Vice President Kashim Shettima. The conference brought together top military leaders, security experts, former service chiefs, and other key stakeholders to review the state of national security and the role of the Army.

Tinubu’s message was made public in a statement issued by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele.

According to the President, the Federal Government remains committed to supporting the Armed Forces to enable them to effectively carry out their constitutional duty of defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and maintaining internal security.

“Our administration will continue to support the Nigerian Army to ensure it remains professional, well-motivated, and operationally effective,” Tinubu said. “This support is essential for the Armed Forces to fulfill their constitutional roles.”

Nigeria has faced serious security challenges in recent years, including insurgency in the North-East, banditry and kidnapping in the North-West and North-Central, separatist violence in the South-East, and oil theft and piracy in the South-South. These threats have placed heavy demands on the military, particularly the Nigerian Army, which plays a central role in internal security operations.

Tinubu paid glowing tribute to both serving and retired Army officers, acknowledging their sacrifices and dedication to national service. He described them as the backbone of the institution and praised their commitment to duty.

“Their sacrifices, leadership, and institutional memory shape the Army,” the President said. “I commend the courage and patriotism of those who place national duty above personal comfort. Their defence of Nigeria’s sovereignty and unity is etched in our history.”

He also highlighted the importance of the Chief of Army Annual Conference, describing it as a platform for deep reflection and strategic thinking at a time when security threats are constantly changing.

According to him, the presence of former Service Chiefs and elder statesmen at the conference showed the depth of experience and heritage within the Armed Forces, which younger officers can learn from.

The President noted that modern security challenges require new ideas, better coordination, and constant review of strategies. He encouraged participants to use the conference to examine current operations and develop practical solutions to emerging threats.

Speaking at the event, the Minister of Defence, retired General Christopher Musa, said the conference was critical to assessing the Nigerian Army’s operational performance and overall readiness.

He explained that the gathering provided an opportunity to review ongoing military operations and ensure they align with national security priorities and the government’s broader development goals.

Musa stressed the need for stronger joint operations among the Armed Forces, as well as closer collaboration with other security agencies such as the police, intelligence services, and civil defence.

“No single service or agency can address Nigeria’s security challenges alone,” he said. “We must work together through joint operations, inter-agency cooperation, and a whole-of-society approach.”

He added that discussions at the conference must lead to real results on the battlefield, not just policy papers or speeches.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for what he described as strong political will in supporting the Army. He said the administration has shown commitment to improving the welfare of soldiers, providing modern equipment, strengthening training, and carrying out reforms within the Army.

Shaibu also praised the National Assembly for its support, particularly in approving budgets and policies that enhance military operations and personnel welfare.

According to him, the welfare of troops remains a top priority, as motivated and well-supported soldiers are better equipped to face security challenges.

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who also spoke at the conference, described security as the foundation of all development. He said no society can grow or attract investment without peace and safety.

Sanwo-Olu commended the Nigerian Army for its role in maintaining security in Lagos and across the country, and pledged the continued support of the Lagos State Government to security agencies.

“Security is the bedrock of development,” the governor said. “We appreciate the sacrifices of our military personnel and will continue to support efforts that keep our people safe.”

The conference attracted a wide range of participants, including senior government officials, Service Chiefs, former Chiefs of Army Staff, heads of security agencies, diplomats, traditional rulers, and other dignitaries.

Over the coming days, participants are expected to deliberate on key operational, administrative, and strategic issues affecting the Nigerian Army. Topics on the agenda include troop welfare, equipment needs, training, civil-military relations, and ways to improve effectiveness in countering insecurity.

A major highlight of the conference will be the unveiling of a biography of the late Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja. Lagbaja, who died in office, is remembered for his service and leadership at a critical time in Nigeria’s security history.
