Bandits struck Fananawa village in Bukuyum Local Government Area of Zamfara State on Saturday night, killing one person, injuring another and kidnapping five residents.
According to eyewitnesses, the attackers entered the village under the cover of darkness and carried out the raid until dawn, leaving the community in fear and panic.
Malam Sani, a resident of Fananawa, described the horrifying night. “The marauders entered the village, killed one-person, kidnapped others, and shot another who sustained serious injuries. He has been referred to the Teaching Hospital in Sokoto for treatment,” he said.
The attack comes amid a rising wave of insecurity in Bukuyum communities. Over the past month, the area has suffered repeated attacks by armed groups, including a recent bomb blast that left residents traumatized and many fleeing their homes.
The police have confirmed the incident and assured the public that efforts are ongoing to rescue the kidnapped victims. The spokesperson for the Zamfara State Police Command, DSP Yazid Abubakar, said, “Our personnel are currently on a rescue mission, and very soon you will hear a success story. The bandits entered the Fananawa community, killed one person, kidnapped five, and injured one. We are doing everything possible to rescue the victims and bring the perpetrators to justice.”
Zamfara State has been struggling with insecurity for several years. Bandits, often heavily armed, carry out attacks that include killings, kidnappings, and armed robbery. Farmers and villagers are frequently targeted, and many have been forced to abandon their homes and farms due to fear of attacks.
Communities in Bukuyum and other parts of Zamfara have repeatedly called on state and federal authorities to intervene and protect residents. However, despite ongoing security operations, attacks continue to occur, highlighting the challenges facing law enforcement in the state.
The recent attack on Fananawa is not an isolated case. In neighboring villages, bandits have carried out similar raids, often in the night, killing residents, burning houses, and abducting villagers for ransom. The cycle of attacks has disrupted farming activities and education, as schools in some areas have been closed for safety reasons.
Human rights organizations and civil society groups have continued to call for more robust measures to protect vulnerable communities. They have recommended a combination of military, police, and community-based efforts to curb the menace of banditry in the state.
While security agencies continue to work on rescuing the kidnapped villagers, residents of Fananawa and surrounding communities remain in fear. Many families are reportedly sleeping outside their homes or fleeing to nearby towns in search of safety.
The Nigerian government has repeatedly stated its commitment to ending banditry and insurgency in the northern states, including Zamfara. However, experts say that without sustained and coordinated efforts, attacks like the one on Fananawa are likely to continue.
This latest incident underscores the urgent need for improved security measures, better intelligence gathering, and more rapid response to threats in vulnerable areas. As the police continue their rescue mission, families of the kidnapped victims anxiously await news of their safe return.
Residents of Zamfara have expressed hope that the security forces will succeed in rescuing those abducted and bringing the attackers to justice. Meanwhile, the community of Fananawa continues to mourn the loss of life and pray for the safe return of those taken by the bandits.
