Reports circulating on social media recently suggested that the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, rejected calls from former Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha to resolve the South-East crisis through dialogue. The claims stated that Kanu’s supposed refusal was a key reason for the ongoing insecurity in the region, particularly with respect to the enforcement of the Monday sit-at-home order. The reports further insinuated that Kanu would not have been arrested, detained, and prosecuted if he had embraced the dialogue initiative.

However, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, younger brother of Nnamdi Kanu, has strongly refuted these reports, calling them “false, misleading, and baseless.” He emphasized that while differences in opinion may exist between his brother and the former governor, these do not amount to a rejection of dialogue.

“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has never snubbed former governor Owelle Rochas Okorocha,” Prince Emmanuel said during a media interaction on Sunday. “Regardless of any perceived differences, both figures recognized the value of dialogue in addressing the South-East region’s complex issues.”

The IPOB leader has faced intense scrutiny in recent years due to the security challenges in the South-East region, including violent clashes and disruptions linked to the Monday sit-at-home orders. These orders, often enforced by pro-Biafra groups, have disrupted businesses and public activities, drawing concern from residents, political leaders, and security agencies.

In response to these security challenges, ex-Governor Okorocha reportedly reached out to Nnamdi Kanu, proposing dialogue as a way to ease tensions, foster understanding, and restore peace to the region. Social media reports, however, quickly suggested that Kanu rejected the effort, sparking debates online and in some media circles.

Prince Emmanuel Kanu described these claims as “inaccurate and far from the truth.” He stressed that the IPOB leader remains committed to peaceful engagement and believes that dialogue is essential for lasting solutions in the South-East.

“Peaceful engagement remains critical to finding lasting solutions to the challenges confronting the South-East,” Prince Emmanuel said. “Mazi Kanu has always been open to sincere conversations aimed at addressing the complex political and security issues affecting the region.”

The younger Kanu also noted that differences in approach or opinion between leaders do not negate the willingness to communicate. He emphasized that both Nnamdi Kanu and Rochas Okorocha understand the importance of conversation and compromise when dealing with sensitive matters, especially in regions facing socio-political unrest.

The role of leaders in mitigating these tensions through dialogue has been widely discussed. Experts argue that peaceful negotiation and engagement with community leaders, activists, and political figures are crucial in ensuring stability. In this context, the interactions between Okorocha and Nnamdi Kanu were widely viewed as a potential avenue for reducing unrest and fostering cooperation.

Prince Emmanuel’s clarification comes at a time when misinformation and speculation continue to circulate online, influencing public opinion and political narratives. He warned against misrepresenting Kanu’s position, noting that such narratives can escalate tensions unnecessarily.

“Attempts to portray Mazi Nnamdi Kanu as unwilling to engage in dialogue are misleading and could harm ongoing efforts to achieve peace,” he said. “We urge media houses, social media users, and political commentators to verify information before sharing or publishing it.”

While IPOB and Nnamdi Kanu have remained central figures in discussions about South-East security and political stability, the organization has also faced criticism for alleged involvement in activities that disrupt public order. Despite this, Prince Emmanuel emphasized that Kanu’s commitment to dialogue remains consistent and genuine.

In conclusion, the claims that Nnamdi Kanu rejected Rochas Okorocha’s call for dialogue have been firmly denied by his younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu. He reaffirmed that the IPOB leader has always been open to sincere conversations aimed at resolving the complex political and security challenges in the South-East.
