Kano State was on Monday thrown into deep mourning following the sudden death of two sitting members of the Kano State House of Assembly, who passed away within minutes of each other.
The lawmakers, Sarki Aliyu Daneji and Aminu Sa’adu, represented Kano Municipal and Ungoggo Local Government Areas respectively. Their near-simultaneous deaths sent shockwaves across the state, especially among political leaders, lawmakers, and residents who described the incident as tragic and painful.
Aminu Sa’adu, the member representing Ungoggo Local Government Area, was reported to have died first. While details surrounding the cause of his death were still unclear as of the time of filing this report, news of his passing spread quickly across the state.
Barely minutes after the announcement of Sa’adu’s death, another sad news followed. Sarki Aliyu Daneji, the lawmaker representing Kano Municipal Local Government Area, also passed away. The closeness of the two deaths shocked many people, as both men were active members of the Assembly and were seen in public not long before the incident.
The death of Sarki Aliyu Daneji was officially confirmed by the spokesperson to the Kano State Governor, Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa. He announced the development through a post on his official Facebook page, where he expressed sadness over the loss.
In his message, Dawakin Tofa described Daneji as a committed public servant who worked for the development of his constituency and Kano State at large. He also extended condolences to the families of both lawmakers, the Kano State House of Assembly, and the people of Kano Municipal and Ungoggo local government areas.
The Kano State House of Assembly also expressed deep sorrow over the deaths. Lawmakers described the incident as one of the darkest moments in the history of the Assembly, noting that losing two members in such a short time was unprecedented.
Sarki Aliyu Daneji was a well-known figure in Kano politics. As the representative of Kano Municipal Local Government Area, one of the most politically active areas in the state, he played a key role in debates and legislative duties. Colleagues described him as vocal, dedicated, and always willing to speak on issues affecting his constituents.
Similarly, Aminu Sa’adu was regarded as a hardworking lawmaker who focused on issues affecting Ungoggo Local Government Area. During his time in the Assembly, he was known for supporting bills and motions aimed at improving education, healthcare, and infrastructure in his constituency.
The Kano State House of Assembly is made up of elected representatives from the 44 local government areas of the state. These lawmakers are responsible for making laws, approving budgets, and overseeing government activities. The sudden loss of two members has created a gap in the Assembly and raised concerns about how their constituencies will be represented in the coming weeks.
Across Kano, residents expressed sadness and disbelief. Many described the incident as a reminder of how fragile life can be. Some residents gathered in small groups to discuss the tragedy, while others took to social media to express their condolences and prayers for the families of the deceased lawmakers.
Religious leaders in the state also reacted to the development, urging people to remain calm and pray for the souls of the departed. They reminded residents that death is a part of life and encouraged leaders to continue serving the people with honesty and dedication.
As of the time of this report, details regarding burial arrangements for both lawmakers had not been officially announced. However, Islamic rites are expected to be observed, in line with religious practices in the state.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is also expected to formally address the state on the matter, as the government prepares to honour the late lawmakers for their service to Kano State.
The deaths of Sarki Aliyu Daneji and Aminu Sa’adu have left a deep mark on Kano’s political landscape. For many residents, the loss goes beyond politics, as both men were seen as sons of the soil who worked to improve the lives of their people.
