The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has cautioned that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) risks losing the 2027 general elections unless its leadership takes urgent corrective action. Wike, a former Governor of Rivers State, made the warning during his end-of-year media chat on Monday, citing leadership challenges within the party as a major factor affecting its electoral prospects.
According to Wike, the PDP currently lacks focus, direction, and commitment from its leadership, which he said has left the party unprepared for the 2027 elections. “We have a leadership that is not focused, a leadership that does not know what to do, a leadership that does not consider suggestions,” he said.
The FCT Minister stressed that leadership is critical to the party’s survival and ability to compete effectively in national elections. He added that if the leadership fails to take decisive action now, the PDP might miss the 2027 elections and would have to start preparing seriously for 2031.
“By 2027, it’s likely that we may not make it,” Wike said. “But are we going to allow the party to die? Can’t we start rebuilding now ahead of 2031?”
Wike’s comments come at a time when the PDP, which ruled Nigeria from 1999 to 2015, faces internal divisions and criticism over its organizational structure, decision-making processes, and leadership style. Analysts have pointed out that without a unified strategy and strong leadership, the party could struggle to regain power from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
During his media chat, Wike highlighted the importance of commitment from party leaders. He said that once leaders are committed, there is nothing impossible for the party. “There is nothing that is impossible once you are committed,” he said. “First of all, what is happening to my party is what I have predicted before. I have warned that if things are not done in the right way, this is where we are going to find ourselves. No Nigerian can say they didn’t hear me. I have stated it numerous times.”
The minister urged the party to move beyond merely seeking to take over government. He emphasized that the PDP must strategically position itself, consider advice from stakeholders, and ensure that leadership decisions are timely and effective.
“It’s not just about taking over government; we must position ourselves effectively. If the leadership is strong, they need to consider suggestions. Leadership is crucial in everything we do, leadership in associations and in government is essential. If leaders do not make the right decisions, we will face the consequences,” he added.
Wike also expressed optimism that the PDP can bounce back to power if its leaders demonstrate focus, commitment, and inclusiveness. He encouraged party members to be proactive in rebuilding the party and correcting existing shortcomings.
“Leadership is everything,” he said. “If the leadership is committed, I will come back to say look we have made a mistake. Why is it that things are happening this way now? What can we do to correct it?”
The FCT Minister’s warning reflects growing concerns among party stakeholders about the PDP’s internal challenges, which include disputes over party structures, candidate selection, and alignment of state and national leadership priorities. Analysts believe that the party must address these issues quickly to remain competitive in future elections.
Wike’s remarks also highlight the broader issue of leadership accountability within Nigerian political parties. Effective leadership, according to the minister, requires listening to advice, taking calculated decisions, and being committed to the party’s long-term goals rather than short-term gains.
He stressed that the PDP’s current trajectory could undermine its electoral prospects, warning that without immediate intervention, the party might miss the opportunity to regain power in 2027. “Leadership is not about titles; it is about making the right decisions at the right time,” he said.
The FCT Minister’s comments are likely to resonate with party members who have been expressing concerns over the PDP’s preparedness for national elections. Some stakeholders have argued that the party must prioritize internal reforms, strengthen party structures at state and local levels, and foster unity among members to avoid a repeat of past electoral losses.
Wike’s message to the PDP also serves as a call to action for other political actors, emphasizing that elections are won not just by slogans or popularity but by effective organization, clear leadership, and the ability to connect with citizens’ needs.
“Leadership in associations and government is essential. If leaders do not make the right decisions, we will face the consequences,” Wike said, reiterating the need for serious reforms and strategic planning within the PDP.
