The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has confirmed that he will be contesting the 2027 presidential election, insisting that he will not accept the position of vice-president to any candidate. The former governor of Anambra State made the declaration during a X Space discussion on Sunday night, reiterating his commitment to leading Nigeria as president.

Obi stated that his experience and achievements in governance and business make him fully qualified to lead the nation. “I am not travelling around the world to learn governance to be Vice President,” he said. “I know how to turn Nigeria around. I built my business from scratch and have more experience than any candidate, including the sitting President.”

He highlighted the need for Nigerians to support him and pray for his success, stating, “Peter Obi will be on the ballot in 2027. I need your support. I need your prayers.”

The ex-governor also addressed questions regarding his role in the African Democratic Party (ADC), a coalition party, clarifying that he is not a newcomer. Critics had raised doubts about his membership and involvement in the party, suggesting that his association was recent or politically motivated. Obi dismissed these claims, asserting that he has been an active and integral member since the party’s formation.

“I am a bona fide member of the ADC,” he said. “I have actively supported the party over the years, including my public campaign and endorsement of Dr. Mo for the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) chairmanship position in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).”

Obi further clarified that his involvement in the coalition is driven by his desire to improve Nigeria, rather than personal ambition or the quest for power. “I am not in this coalition to grab power. I am here because I want to make Nigeria work,” he said.

He urged Nigerians to focus on building a credible political alternative anchored on competence, accountability, and service to the people. According to Obi, partisan attacks and misinformation should not distract citizens from pursuing effective governance and meaningful reforms.

The former Anambra State governor rose to national prominence during the 2023 general elections, where he ran on a platform that emphasized fiscal responsibility, transparency, and good governance. His campaign attracted significant support from young voters, civil society groups, and urban professionals, who praised his practical approach to leadership and problem-solving.

Obi’s confirmation of his 2027 presidential bid comes at a time when political discussions in Nigeria are intensifying, with various parties beginning early preparations for the next general elections. The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are both expected to field strong candidates, making the political environment competitive.

“This is a strategic move,” said a political commentator. “Peter Obi wants to establish that he is not interested in compromise positions or secondary roles. He is positioning himself as a candidate who is ready to lead, with a clear vision for Nigeria’s future.”

Obi’s focus on governance experience, both in the private and public sectors, is central to his political narrative. As governor of Anambra State, he earned recognition for improving financial management, education, and healthcare, as well as for enhancing infrastructural development. He frequently cites these achievements to argue that he has the capability to implement reforms at the national level.

His engagement with the ADC-led coalition further underscores his strategy of building alliances that can provide a platform for national influence. By working with coalition partners, Obi hopes to expand his political reach and mobilize a broader base of support ahead of the 2027 elections.

“Peter Obi represents a new direction,” said a civic leader. “He is asking citizens to focus on the quality of leadership rather than tribal, religious, or party affiliations. This approach has gained him widespread popularity, particularly among younger voters.”

The former presidential candidate also highlighted the importance of unity within the coalition, stressing that personal ambition should not override the broader goal of national development. “Our aim is not just to win elections, but to make Nigeria work for all its citizens,” he said.

Obi’s statement about not accepting a vice-presidential role comes in the wake of speculations and political maneuvering by other parties and politicians who have considered potential alliances or running mates for the next elections. By making his position clear, he aims to prevent ambiguity and maintain focus on his presidential agenda.
