The Edo State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Amadin William for allegedly killing his childhood friend, Eghosa Osarietinomwan, who recently returned from Europe to celebrate the Yuletide with his family.
The arrest was confirmed by the Public Relations Officer of the Command, ASP Eno Ikoedem, who spoke to newsmen on Sunday in Benin City. She disclosed that the suspect had committed the crime during a house-warming ceremony in Oben community, Orhionmwon Local Government Area, and had initially fled the scene.
“The deceased sustained deep machete cuts on the neck after stepping out to ease himself during the house-warming celebration,” ASP Ikoedem said. “He was rushed to the hospital for treatment, where he was later confirmed dead. The suspect, after committing the crime, absconded but was tracked and arrested on December 27. Meanwhile, two other persons have been arrested in connection with the arson that followed the incident.”
According to sources, the suspect and the deceased had been childhood friends. Eghosa, who had been living in Europe, had returned to Oben to celebrate the Yuletide season with his family and friends. The attack reportedly occurred on December 22, 2025, during a house-warming ceremony organized by Eghosa.
Witnesses said that Amadin allegedly lured Eghosa to a bush path during the celebration, where he attacked him with a machete. The brutal assault left the victim with severe neck injuries. Neighbors and family members quickly rushed him to the hospital, but he could not survive the injuries.
Following the murder, angry youths in the community reportedly reacted violently. Eyewitnesses said that the suspect’s house was set ablaze as a form of reprisal attack, adding to the tension and fear in the area. Two other persons were later arrested in connection with the arson attack.
Edo State has witnessed several violent incidents during public and private celebrations in recent years, often involving disputes between friends, family members, or community youths. House-warming ceremonies, birthdays, and traditional festivities, while meant to bring people together, have occasionally been marred by violence, leading to property damage and loss of lives.
ASP Ikoedem highlighted that the police were determined to ensure that justice is served. “We are investigating the matter thoroughly, and the suspect is now in our custody. We urge residents to remain calm and allow the law to take its course,” she said.
Oben community leaders described the incident as shocking and called for peace in the community. “It is very sad that such a thing could happen between childhood friends. We urge the youths to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands,” a community elder said.
Friends and relatives of Eghosa expressed grief and disbelief at the incident. Many said they were unaware of any conflict between him and Amadin. “Eghosa came back from Europe to celebrate Christmas and the New Year with us. He was a peaceful person, and this tragedy has left us in deep mourning,” a family member said.
The circumstances surrounding the murder have raised questions about personal security during celebrations in Edo State. Experts say that disputes, even among friends, can escalate into deadly attacks if not handled properly. They advise organizers of social events to implement security measures, including controlled access and surveillance, especially when large numbers of people are involved.
The Edo State Police Command has a history of cracking down on violent crimes, and residents hope that swift justice will follow in this case. Community members have called on the police to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that the suspect faces the full weight of the law.
This tragic event also highlights the risks faced by returnees from abroad who come home to celebrate with family and friends. Eghosa’s return from Europe for the Yuletide celebration was meant to be a joyful reunion, but it ended in tragedy. Experts suggest that returnees should be cautious in unfamiliar environments and that communities should strengthen local safety measures.
The incident in Oben has sent shockwaves across Orhionmwon Local Government Area and beyond. Social media platforms have been filled with expressions of grief and calls for justice. Many Nigerians expressed concern about the increasing frequency of violent incidents during festive periods.
As of now, Amadin William remains in police custody, and further investigations are ongoing. The police have promised to present him in court soon and ensure that justice is served. Meanwhile, the two other individuals arrested in connection with the arson attack are also being investigated.
The tragic death of Eghosa Osarietinomwan serves as a somber reminder of the dangers of unchecked anger, unresolved disputes, and the consequences of violent actions. Residents of Edo State are calling on everyone to uphold peace and harmony, especially during celebrations meant to unite families and communities.
The Edo State Police Command continues to encourage residents to cooperate with law enforcement, avoid taking the law into their own hands, and allow the justice system to handle criminal matters. Authorities also reiterated their commitment to protecting lives and property in the state, particularly during festive periods when social gatherings are common.
