Picnic Turns Tragic as Three Feared Dead at Buruku River in Benue

A leisure outing ended in tragedy in Benue State as at least three persons are feared dead following an incident at River Buruku in Buruku Local Government Area.

The incident occurred on December 26, 2025, when a group of people reportedly went to the river for a picnic to relax and celebrate the festive season. What was meant to be a time of joy and recreation, however, turned into a devastating experience after some members of the group were suspected to have drowned.

Rescue and recovery efforts began immediately after the incident was reported. According to information gathered, the search continued into the next day. On December 27, emergency responders recovered three bodies from the river, raising fears that more people may have been involved.

Although official details are still limited, the incident has caused shock and sadness within the Buruku community and beyond.

Reports circulating on social media showed that emergency responders were mobilised to the scene shortly after the incident. Images and videos shared online captured an ambulance, security personnel, and a large crowd gathered along the riverbank during the recovery operation.

Residents said the presence of security officers helped to control the crowd as rescue workers focused on retrieving the bodies from the fast-flowing river.

As of the time of this report, authorities had not released the identities of the victims. Families of those believed to be involved are anxiously awaiting official confirmation and more information on how the tragedy happened.

A local resident said the entire community has been thrown into mourning. “Everyone is sad. People are still trying to understand how it happened. Many families are worried because their loved ones went to the river that day,” he said.

River Buruku is a well-known river in Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State. Over the years, it has become a popular spot for relaxation, especially during festive periods such as Christmas and public holidays.

Despite its appeal, the river is also known for its strong and fast-flowing currents. Community leaders and safety officials have repeatedly warned residents about the dangers of swimming or picnicking too close to the river, especially for those who are not strong swimmers.

Sadly, this is not the first time River Buruku has been linked to drowning incidents. Past cases have been recorded, particularly during festive seasons when many people visit the area for leisure without proper safety measures.

Local authorities have often described the river as deceptive, noting that it may appear calm on the surface while hiding dangerous currents underneath.

The incident highlights the risks associated with recreational outings during festive periods. Across Nigeria, rivers, beaches, and other natural water bodies often attract visitors during holidays as people look for affordable ways to relax and celebrate.

Community leaders in Buruku have repeatedly cautioned residents, especially young people, against unsafe activities around the river. Some elders have even suggested restricting access to certain dangerous parts of the river, but enforcement has remained a challenge.

A community leader who spoke on the incident said, “We have warned people many times. This river is not safe for swimming. Unfortunately, people still go there, especially during celebrations.”

He called on the government and relevant agencies to step up public awareness campaigns and provide clear warnings around the river.

As news of the tragedy spread, families of those who visited the river that day have been left in distress. Many are waiting for official statements from authorities to confirm the number of victims and the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Some relatives were seen near the riverbank during the recovery efforts, hoping for positive news. The atmosphere was described as tense and emotional, with prayers and tears as the search continued.

Community members have also called for counselling and support for affected families, noting that such incidents leave lasting emotional pain.

Following the incident, residents and safety advocates have renewed calls for stronger safety measures around River Buruku and similar locations across the state.

Suggestions include placing warning signs around dangerous sections of the river, restricting access during high-risk periods, and increasing public education on water safety.

Others have urged the Benue State Government and local authorities to work with community leaders to find safer recreational alternatives for youths during festive periods.
