President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said that sustained military operations against terrorists and criminal groups are producing clear and measurable results across Nigeria, with many communities now enjoying improved safety.

The president made this known on Tuesday in Abuja during the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day gala and award night. He was represented at the event by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris.

According to Tinubu, the armed forces and other security agencies have continued to put pressure on criminal networks across the country, leading to a reduction in fear and violence in several areas that were once unsafe.

He said communities that previously lived under constant threat from terrorists, bandits, kidnappers, and other criminals are now experiencing relative peace. This, he noted, is the result of consistent military operations and better coordination among security agencies.

Nigeria has faced serious security challenges for over a decade, including insurgency in the North-East, banditry in the North-West and North-Central regions, as well as kidnapping and armed robbery in other parts of the country. These problems have led to loss of lives, displacement of communities, and economic hardship.

Since assuming office in May 2023, President Tinubu has repeatedly stated that security is a top priority of his administration. His government has focused on strengthening the armed forces, improving intelligence sharing, and increasing cooperation among security agencies.

At the event, Tinubu also highlighted the importance of Nigeria’s partnership with regional and international allies. He said collaboration with neighbouring countries and global partners has helped Nigeria improve intelligence gathering, border security, and overall effectiveness in fighting crime.

“Enhanced collaboration with regional and international partners has contributed to restoring public confidence and stabilising affected communities,” he said.

The president stressed that the progress being recorded would not be possible without the sacrifices of Nigerian soldiers, officers, and other security personnel, many of whom have paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.

He described the sacrifices of fallen and serving military personnel as the foundation of Nigeria’s peace, unity, and democracy. According to him, the country’s freedom and stability rest on the courage and dedication of its armed forces.

Tinubu said remembrance of fallen heroes should go beyond annual ceremonies and symbolic events. He noted that the nation owes a lasting duty to those who gave their lives in defence of Nigeria.

“Remembrance is not just a ceremonial activity,” the president said. “It is a lasting national duty owed to those who laid down their lives in defence of the nation.”

He also acknowledged the role played by military families in national defence. Tinubu thanked the spouses, children, and relatives of service personnel for their patience, resilience, and support, noting that their sacrifices often go unnoticed.

“Behind every soldier is a family that shares in the burden of service,” he said. “We honour not only our troops, but also their families who stand by them through difficult times.”

As part of efforts to deepen public appreciation for the armed forces, Tinubu announced two new public engagement initiatives. The first is the “Thank-a-Soldier Electronic Wall,” a digital platform where Nigerians can post messages of appreciation to serving and retired military personnel.

The second initiative is the “My Nigerian Hero Campaign,” a year-long social media programme designed to highlight the stories and contributions of Nigerian military personnel, both past and present.

According to the president, these initiatives are aimed at strengthening the bond between civilians and the military, while encouraging national unity and respect for those who serve.

Tinubu reiterated that security remains the number one priority of his administration. He pledged continued investment in modern equipment, improved training, and better welfare for members of the armed forces.

He also urged military personnel to remain disciplined, united, and loyal to the Nigerian Constitution, stressing that professionalism and respect for the rule of law are essential to long-term peace and stability.

Speaking at the event, the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, praised the courage and sacrifices of Nigeria’s military personnel. He said the freedom and sovereignty of the country are built on the dedication and bravery of men and women in uniform.

Musa noted that the awards presented during the gala reflect real stories of courage, commitment, and quiet sacrifice. According to him, many military personnel work tirelessly behind the scenes, often without public recognition.

“The awards we present today represent more than titles,” Musa said. “They tell stories of bravery, sacrifice, and service to the nation.”

The gala and award night featured honours for both serving and retired military officers who have made significant contributions to national security. Among those recognised were the Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu; former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai; and former Army spokesperson, Sani Usman.

The Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day is held annually to honour Nigeria’s fallen heroes and to appreciate the efforts of serving military personnel. It also serves as a reminder of the cost of peace and the need for continued support for the armed forces.

As Nigeria continues to confront security challenges, the government says it remains committed to supporting the military and ensuring that gains recorded are sustained. While challenges still exist, the Tinubu administration insists that steady progress is being made.
