The Ogun State Police Command has said that popular TikToker Mirabel, known on social media as @mirab351, will face prosecution if investigations show that her rape allegation is false.
At the same time, the police assured the public that if her claims are confirmed to be true, the alleged perpetrator will be arrested and charged to court.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, made this known during an interview with Channels Television while responding to public concerns about the case.
According to Babaseyi, the police remain neutral and are committed to finding out the truth through proper investigation.
“In general, if she’s telling the truth, the perpetrator will be arrested and charged to court appropriately,” he said.
“If it is otherwise, as you know, the law goes against giving false information, and that can make anyone who gives false information culpable.”
The police spokesperson also dismissed claims circulating on social media that Mirabel had been arrested.
“What we are trying to dispel is that there’s an allegation online that the police arrested her. She was not arrested by the police. She had a case and reported at the police station and we are investigating it, not as people claim that she was arrested as seen on social media,” Babaseyi explained.
The clarification followed widespread social media posts claiming that the TikToker had been detained after making the rape allegation. The reports sparked anger among her supporters, who feared that she was being punished for speaking out.
The case gained national attention after Mirabel posted a viral video online alleging that she was sexually assaulted on February 15.
In the emotional video, she claimed that an unidentified man forced his way into her apartment, restrained her, and threatened her. She also alleged that the suspect boasted about his family’s influence and suggested that justice might be blocked.
The video quickly spread across social media platforms, leading to public outrage and calls for swift action. Many Nigerians demanded that the authorities carry out a thorough investigation and ensure justice.
Following the public reaction, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun State directed the Divisional Police Officer of the Ibafo Division to immediately make contact with the victim.
Police authorities said the victim later reported at the Ibafo Police Station, where officers collected preliminary information about the incident.
During the process, it was discovered that the alleged crime took place within the jurisdiction of Ogijo. As a result, the case was transferred to the appropriate division for proper handling.
The police said the victim was escorted to a medical facility for examination and urgent treatment. This is part of standard procedure in sexual assault cases, where medical evidence can play an important role in investigations.
After initial medical attention, she was transferred to the Ogijo Police Station for documentation and continuation of investigative steps.
According to the police, she was later referred for extended medical care because of her fragile physical and emotional state.
Authorities also assured the public that efforts are being made to protect her safety while the investigation continues.
While stressing that the investigation is ongoing, the police reminded the public that giving false information to law enforcement is an offence under Nigerian law.
However, women’s rights groups have often warned that too much focus on possible false allegations can discourage genuine victims from coming forward.
In Nigeria, cases of sexual violence are often underreported due to fear of stigma, shame, and lack of trust in the justice system. Many survivors face social pressure and criticism when they speak out.
Sexual assault remains a serious issue in Nigeria. In recent years, several high-profile cases have sparked protests and renewed calls for stronger laws and better enforcement.
The Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act provides legal protection for victims and outlines penalties for offenders. However, enforcement varies across states, and challenges remain in gathering evidence and securing convictions.
The Mirabel case has once again highlighted the role of social media in shaping public opinion. Viral posts can bring attention to serious issues, but they can also spread misinformation.
Police authorities have urged the public to avoid spreading unverified information and to allow investigators to do their work.
Since the video surfaced, many Nigerians have expressed support for Mirabel, calling for justice and transparency. Others have called for caution, saying the matter should be handled carefully to avoid damaging reputations before facts are established.
Human rights advocates say the focus should remain on ensuring a fair investigation.
As the investigation continues, the Ogun State Police Command says it is committed to due process.
The outcome of the case will depend on the findings of the investigation, including medical reports and other evidence gathered by the police.
For now, the command has made its position clear: if the allegation is proven true, the suspect will face the law. If it is proven false, legal consequences may also follow.
