The Ondo State Police Command has launched a manhunt for the killers of the monarch of Agamo Community in Akure North Local Government Area, Oba Kehinde Falodun, who was reportedly murdered on Wednesday evening at his palace.
According to sources, unknown gunmen stormed the palace with the intention of kidnapping the monarch. When he resisted, they allegedly shot him several times. When the bullets reportedly failed to penetrate, the attackers struck him on the head with a heavy object, leading to his death.
A community source disclosed that about ten armed men invaded the area, heading straight for the palace before the attack. The motive behind the killing remains unclear, but residents fear it could be linked to ongoing security challenges in the region.
Confirming the incident in a statement on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said investigations had begun and that efforts were ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects.
“Information received at the division at about 7:50 p.m. from a community leader, High Chief Ajewole Clement of New Town, Itaogbolu, indicated that approximately six armed men stormed the residence of the monarch, forcibly took him from his compound and fled the scene,” Jimoh stated.
“The victim was later found a few metres away with gunshot wounds and was confirmed dead at the scene. Efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects. Monitoring and surveillance activities have been intensified across the area to ensure the safety of residents and prevent a further breakdown of law and order.”
Residents of Agamo Community are still in shock following the brutal killing. Oba Falodun, who had been the traditional ruler of the community for several years, was widely respected for his role in promoting peace and development in the area.
Many community members described the attack as a severe blow to local leadership and security. “It is a sad day for us,” said one resident. “He was a good leader who cared for the community. We hope the police can quickly find the killers.”
Security sources say that similar attacks have been increasing in Akure North and other parts of Ondo State, raising concerns over banditry and violent crime.
The killing of Oba Falodun comes barely a month after a violent attack in Ayede Community, also in Akure North Local Government Area. In that incident, suspected bandits abducted a pregnant woman, Mrs Mary Jesulayomi, who was later released after a ransom was paid.
The repeated incidents have heightened fears among residents about safety in rural communities. Experts say that attacks on traditional leaders could destabilize local governance and erode trust between communities and security agencies.
“The killing of a monarch is serious because it is not just an attack on an individual, but on the institution of traditional authority,” said a security analyst. “It is important that the police act swiftly to prevent further escalation and reassure residents.”
The Ondo State Police Command has intensified patrols and surveillance in the area following the attack. Checkpoints have been set up on key roads, and officers are working with community leaders to gather intelligence on the fleeing suspects.
DSP Jimoh appealed to members of the public to provide any information that could lead to the arrest of the attackers. “Residents are urged to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and report any suspicious activities in their neighborhoods,” he said.
Traditional rulers across Ondo State have condemned the murder, describing it as a “cowardly act” and urging security agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The incident has sparked renewed calls for stronger security measures in rural areas. Analysts say that attacks on community leaders could embolden criminals and worsen lawlessness if not addressed decisively.
Some residents have suggested increased collaboration between police and local vigilante groups to ensure community protection. Others called for more government presence and rapid response teams to rural communities vulnerable to attacks.
Ondo State has experienced sporadic attacks in recent years, particularly in remote areas where access roads are limited, and security presence is minimal. Banditry, kidnapping, and armed robbery have disrupted local economies and left communities feeling unsafe.
In Akure North Local Government Area, traditional leaders play a critical role in conflict resolution and community development. The killing of a monarch is therefore seen as a direct threat to the stability of the community.
As the police manhunt continues, residents of Agamo Community remain on edge, hoping that swift justice will be served. Authorities say they are following all leads to apprehend the suspects and prevent further attacks.
For now, the community mourns the loss of Oba Kehinde Falodun while calling on the state government to enhance security measures to protect lives and property in vulnerable areas.
