The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying air operations against terrorists and criminal groups across the country, as part of ongoing efforts to improve security and protect lives.

This assurance was given by the Chief of the Air Staff, Sunday Aneke, during an Eid-el-Fitr luncheon held for troops of Operation Whirl Stroke in Makurdi, Benue State.

Represented at the event by the Chief of Civil-Military Relations, Edward Gabkwet, the Air Chief praised the courage and dedication of personnel deployed in the operation. He expressed appreciation for their sacrifices and commitment to national security.

“I have profound appreciation for the courage, discipline and sacrifices of personnel deployed within the theatre,” he said.

The renewed promise comes at a time when Nigeria continues to face serious security challenges in different regions. These include insurgency in the North-East, banditry and kidnapping in the North-West and North-Central, as well as communal clashes and other forms of violence in parts of the country.

To address these threats, the Nigerian military has relied on joint operations involving the Army, Navy, and Air Force. In particular, the Air Force has played a key role by providing aerial support, surveillance, and targeted strikes against criminal hideouts.

According to the Air Chief, the NAF will continue to focus on intelligence-driven air campaigns aimed at weakening the capabilities of terrorists and criminal networks.

He explained that recent operations have involved precision strikes, close air support for ground troops, and armed reconnaissance missions. These efforts, he said, have helped to disrupt the movement and supply systems of criminal groups.

“The NAF remains resolute in prosecuting intelligence-driven air campaigns designed to degrade the operational capabilities of terrorists and criminal networks,” he said.

He added that cooperation with other security agencies has been critical to the success recorded so far. By working closely with the Nigerian Army and other services, the Air Force has been able to respond quickly to threats and provide support during ground operations.

Operation Whirl Stroke, where the event was held, is one of the military’s major operations in the North-Central region. It was launched to address security issues in states such as Benue, Nasarawa, and Taraba, where communities have faced attacks linked to armed groups and clashes between farmers and herders.

Over the years, the operation has been strengthened with the deployment of air assets to improve surveillance and strike capabilities. Military authorities say this has helped to reduce attacks in some areas, although challenges still remain.

The Air Chief noted that recent successes in the operation were made possible by the professionalism and determination of personnel on the frontlines.

“These operational gains are due to the professionalism, determination and joint operational synergy demonstrated by personnel,” he said.

Also speaking at the event, the Air Officer Commanding Tactical Air Command, M.C. Ekwueme, commended troops for their high morale and dedication to duty. He encouraged them to remain focused and united in the face of evolving security threats.

He stressed that sustained effort and teamwork would be needed to maintain the progress achieved so far.

Similarly, the Air Component Commander, O.O. Evulobi, expressed appreciation for the continued support from the leadership of the Air Force and other stakeholders. He noted that collaboration has played a key role in advancing operational success.

The Eid-el-Fitr luncheon provided an opportunity for military leaders to interact with troops, boost morale, and recognise their efforts. Such events are often organised to encourage personnel and strengthen unity within the ranks.

Beyond current operations, the Air Chief also highlighted steps being taken to improve the capacity of the Air Force. These include investments in modern aircraft, advanced training programmes, and welfare initiatives for personnel.

He said these measures are aimed at ensuring that the NAF remains effective in carrying out its duties and responding to emerging security challenges.

The Air Chief urged personnel to remain vigilant, disciplined, and committed to their duties, noting that their role is critical to achieving lasting peace and stability in the country.

Nigeria’s security situation remains a major concern for citizens, with many calling for stronger action from security agencies. While military operations have recorded some successes, analysts say a combination of strategies, including community engagement and economic development, is needed to address the root causes of violence.

For now, the Nigerian Air Force says it will continue to play its part by maintaining pressure on criminal elements through sustained air operations.

As the fight against insecurity continues, the commitment by the NAF leadership signals ongoing efforts by the military to restore peace and protect communities across the country.
