The Osun State Police Command has confirmed it will investigate allegations surrounding an incident at the Osun-Osogbo Grove, following a formal petition by traditional worshippers in the state.

The police said the move is aimed at ensuring that all claims are properly examined and handled according to the law, as tensions rise over what has become a sensitive religious matter in Osun State.

The spokesperson for the command, Abiodun Ojelabi, disclosed on Tuesday that the petition had been received and would be treated with seriousness.

According to him, the police will follow due process in investigating the claims and ensure that justice is served.

The petition was submitted by the Traditional Religion Worshippers Association of Osun State (TRAWSO), which called for a full investigation into what it described as an invasion of the sacred grove by a group of Christian clerics.

In the petition, the association alleged that some pastors entered the grove and carried out actions that were offensive to traditional beliefs.

The group claimed that a shrine within the grove was desecrated during the incident.

According to TRAWSO, the clerics were seen engaging in activities that challenged the significance of the traditional deity worshipped at the site.

The Osun-Osogbo Grove is a well-known cultural and religious site in Nigeria. It is regarded as sacred by followers of traditional religion and is also recognised internationally for its cultural value.

Every year, the grove hosts the Osun-Osogbo Festival, which attracts visitors from across Nigeria and beyond. The festival celebrates the Osun goddess and highlights the importance of traditional beliefs in Yoruba culture.

Because of its importance, any incident at the grove often draws strong reactions from traditional worshippers.

The issue gained public attention after videos of the incident circulated widely on social media.

In one of the videos, a group of clerics was seen inside the grove, with one of them making statements that appeared to question the power of the traditional deity.

The footage quickly sparked reactions, with many traditionalists expressing anger and concern over what they described as disrespect to their beliefs.

Reports indicated that the situation became tense when traditional worshippers arrived at the scene, leading to a confrontation. The clerics later left the area.

Another video later surfaced, showing individuals believed to be traditionalists entering a church linked to one of the clerics involved in the earlier incident.

In the video, some of the individuals covered their faces while carrying out actions described as ritualistic inside the church premises.

This development raised fears of a possible cycle of retaliation between the groups.

Despite the tension, TRAWSO said it decided to approach the police to ensure that the matter is handled peacefully and within the law.

The President of the association, Oluseyi Atanda, explained that the petition was aimed at seeking justice without resorting to violence.

“We are law-abiding citizens, which is why we have submitted a petition requesting an investigation,” he said.

Atanda added that the association is focused on the initial incident at the grove and declined to comment on the events that followed at the church.

The Osun State Government has also stepped in to manage the situation and prevent further escalation.

Officials confirmed that a meeting was held with key stakeholders, including representatives of TRAWSO, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), and the church linked to the incident.

The meeting provided an opportunity for all sides to express their concerns and seek ways to resolve the issue peacefully.

Government officials said the aim was to promote dialogue and prevent the situation from developing into a larger conflict.

Nigeria is a multi-religious country, with Christianity, Islam, and traditional beliefs all widely practised.

While the country generally enjoys peaceful coexistence among different religious groups, disputes sometimes arise, especially when actions are seen as disrespectful to a particular belief system.

In states like Osun, where traditional religion remains an important part of cultural identity, issues involving sacred sites can be particularly sensitive.

The Osun-Osogbo Grove is not just a religious site but also a symbol of cultural heritage.

It is one of the few remaining sacred groves in Nigeria and has been preserved for generations.

The site is recognised by global bodies for its cultural importance and serves as a reminder of the history and traditions of the Yoruba people.

For many worshippers, the grove is a place of spiritual connection, and any perceived violation is taken seriously.

As investigations begin, both the police and the state government have called for calm among residents.

They urged members of the public to avoid actions that could increase tension and to allow the authorities to handle the matter.

A fair and transparent process, they note, will help build trust among different groups and reduce the chances of conflict.

The involvement of the police, government, and religious organisations shows the importance of cooperation in resolving disputes.

For now, attention remains on the investigation and the steps being taken to maintain peace in Osun State.

As the situation unfolds, many residents hope that dialogue and respect for different beliefs will prevail, ensuring that the state continues to enjoy peaceful coexistence among its diverse communities.
