A key political figure in Lagos State, James Faleke, has called on party members and supporters to back the current Deputy Governor, Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, as the next governor of the state ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Faleke made the call in a message addressed to supporters in Ikeja Federal Constituency and across Lagos State as preparations intensify for party primaries expected to hold next month.
In his statement, Faleke urged party loyalists to unite behind Hamzat, expressing confidence in his ability to lead the state from 2027 to 2035.
“As we prepare for party primaries next month, I urge all our supporters in Ikeja Federal Constituency and Lagos State to support Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat as the next Governor of Lagos State,” he said.
The endorsement is seen as an early move in what is expected to be a competitive race for the governorship position in Nigeria’s commercial capital.
Lagos State, home to over 20 million people, remains one of the most politically important states in the country. Control of the state is often seen as a major advantage for any political party, especially during national elections.
Faleke, who represents Ikeja Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, is a strong member of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). His support for Hamzat is likely to influence party members, especially within his constituency and among party loyalists.
Hamzat currently serves as Deputy Governor under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and has been part of the state’s leadership team since 2019. Before becoming deputy governor, he held several key positions in Lagos State government, including Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure.
The endorsement also signals that political alignments are beginning to take shape ahead of the APC primaries, which will determine the party’s candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
In Lagos politics, endorsements from influential figures often play a major role in shaping outcomes, especially during party primaries where internal consensus can be decisive.
Although Hamzat has not officially declared his intention to run for governor, Faleke’s statement is seen as a strong indication of growing support for his potential candidacy.
The party has maintained control of Lagos State since 1999, making its primary election the key battleground for aspirants seeking to emerge as governor.
As political activities gather pace, stakeholders are expected to engage in consultations, alliances, and endorsements in the coming months.
For many party members, the focus will be on selecting a candidate who can maintain stability, continue ongoing development projects, and strengthen the party’s hold on the state.
Faleke’s call for unity suggests a desire to avoid internal divisions that could weaken the party ahead of the general election.
With the primaries fast approaching, more political leaders are expected to declare their positions, setting the stage for what could be a closely watched contest in Lagos State.
For now, the message from Faleke is clear: party supporters should rally behind Hamzat as preparations begin for the next phase of Lagos politics.
