Several persons are feared dead following a deadly attack by suspected herdsmen along the Odugbeho–Aila Road in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State.
The incident, which has thrown the local community into fear and mourning, reportedly occurred as farmers were returning home from their farmlands. According to eyewitness accounts, the attackers had laid an ambush and opened fire on the unsuspecting victims.
As of the time of filing this report, the exact number of casualties remains unclear. However, at least four bodies have been recovered from the scene, while others are believed to be missing.
A local resident who witnessed the aftermath of the attack said the victims were attacked without warning.
According to the eyewitness, the farmers were going back to their homes when the gunmen suddenly appeared and started shooting.
“There was no sign of danger before it happened. They just came out and started shooting at people,” the source said.
Among those reportedly killed in the attack are two individuals identified as Joy Simon and Lyta Monet. Their deaths have added to the growing list of casualties in the area, which has witnessed repeated violence in recent years.
Residents of Agatu Local Government Area are said to be living in fear following the latest attack. Many farmers are now afraid to return to their fields, raising concerns about food production and livelihoods in the community.
The Odugbeho–Aila Road, where the attack took place, is a major route used by farmers and traders in the area. The ambush has further increased tension, as locals worry about their safety while carrying out daily activities.
Some community members have called on security agencies to increase patrols and ensure the safety of residents.
Benue State has been one of the states most affected by clashes between farmers and suspected herders over the years. These conflicts are often linked to disputes over land, grazing routes, and access to water.
In many cases, attacks are carried out on rural communities, leading to loss of lives and displacement of residents.
Agatu Local Government Area, in particular, has experienced several violent incidents in the past, with many communities repeatedly targeted.
The situation has forced some residents to flee their homes, while others continue to live under constant threat.
Following the latest attack, there have been renewed calls for the government to take stronger action to address insecurity in the state.
Community leaders and residents are urging both the state and federal authorities to deploy more security personnel to vulnerable areas.
They also called for better intelligence gathering and quick response to threats in rural communities.
Some residents expressed frustration over what they described as slow response by security agencies in previous incidents.
The attack is expected to have a negative impact on farming activities in the area. Many farmers rely on daily access to their fields for their livelihood, but increasing insecurity is making this difficult.
Benue State is widely known as the “food basket of the nation” because of its large agricultural output. However, continued attacks on farmers threaten food production and could affect supply to other parts of the country.
While at least four bodies have been confirmed recovered, there are fears that the death toll may rise as search efforts continue.
Some victims may have fled into nearby bushes during the attack, and their whereabouts remain unknown.
Local authorities are yet to release an official statement confirming the number of casualties or details of the incident.
The repeated attacks in Benue and other parts of Nigeria have raised questions about the need for a lasting solution to the farmer-herder conflict.
Without such steps, communities like Agatu may continue to experience cycles of violence.
