Troops of the Nigerian Army under Operation FANSAN YAMMA have killed three suspected terrorists and recovered a large cache of weapons and ammunition during a fighting patrol in Zamfara State.
Security sources said the operation was carried out in Birnin Magaji Local Government Area of the state, one of the areas heavily affected by banditry and armed attacks in the North-West region.
The troops reportedly moved through Birnin Tsaba, Tsanu and Dumburum villages as part of ongoing military operations aimed at clearing criminal hideouts and restoring peace in troubled communities.
According to military sources, the troops encountered armed terrorists at Dumburum village, leading to a gun battle between both sides.
During the exchange of fire, three terrorists were neutralised while others reportedly escaped with gunshot wounds into nearby forests.
The troops also recovered several weapons and ammunition believed to have been used by the criminal group.
Items recovered during the operation included one AK-47 rifle, one SK-21 A1 machine gun and a locally fabricated handgun.
The soldiers also seized six AK-47 magazines and one FN rifle magazine.
In addition to the weapons, the troops recovered a large quantity of ammunition from the scene.
The recovered ammunition included 123 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, 179 rounds of 12.7 by 108mm ammunition mounted on links, and 269 rounds of 7.62mm NATO ammunition.
Military sources confirmed that no soldier was killed or injured during the operation.
The latest operation is part of intensified military efforts against terrorists and bandits operating across Zamfara and neighbouring states in the North-West.
For several years, Zamfara has remained one of the states worst hit by armed banditry, cattle rustling, kidnappings and attacks on rural communities.
Hundreds of people have been killed in violent attacks while many villages have been destroyed or abandoned due to insecurity.
Bandit groups operating in Zamfara and nearby states have also been accused of mass abductions for ransom, illegal mining activities and attacks on highways.
The worsening security situation in the North-West led the Federal Government and the military to launch several operations aimed at dismantling criminal camps and cutting off supply routes used by armed groups.
Operation FANSAN YAMMA is one of the major military operations currently targeting terrorists and bandits in Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi and Katsina states.
The operation involves coordinated ground assaults, intelligence gathering and aerial surveillance by security agencies.
Military authorities have repeatedly stated that troops are recording progress in ongoing offensives despite continued attacks by armed groups.
In recent months, the Nigerian military has intensified fighting patrols and clearance operations across forest areas believed to serve as hideouts for bandits.
Residents of many affected communities have continued to call for stronger military presence and better protection against attacks.
Some local leaders have also appealed for improved intelligence sharing between security agencies and communities to help track the movement of armed groups.
The Federal Government has repeatedly assured Nigerians that efforts are ongoing to tackle insecurity across the country.
President Bola Tinubu has on several occasions directed security agencies to intensify operations against terrorists, kidnappers and other criminal groups threatening national security.
Military authorities have also urged residents to continue supporting security forces with credible information that could help in ongoing operations.
However, they also note that long-term peace in Zamfara and other troubled states will require not only military action but also improved governance, economic opportunities and stronger law enforcement.
Despite repeated offensives by security forces, attacks by armed groups have continued in some rural communities, forcing many residents to flee their homes.
Humanitarian agencies estimate that thousands of people have been displaced by violence across the North-West region.
The latest success recorded by troops in Zamfara is expected to boost confidence among residents who have endured years of insecurity and fear.
For now, military authorities say operations will continue in the affected areas as troops intensify efforts to track fleeing terrorists and destroy criminal camps across the region.
