The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has commended fathers across Nigeria for their sacrifices, dedication and contributions to family stability and national development as the world marks Father’s Day.

In a goodwill message released on Sunday, the police chief said fathers remain a vital pillar in the development of society, noting that their daily efforts in raising responsible children and supporting families deserve national recognition.

The message was contained in a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Iniedu, on behalf of the Inspector-General.

According to the IGP, fathers play a critical role in maintaining family cohesion and promoting social stability, which in turn contributes to peace and progress in the country.

“The Force recognises the sacrifices, dedication, and leadership demonstrated by fathers in raising responsible citizens and strengthening the moral foundations upon which a peaceful and prosperous society is built,” the statement said.

The IGP noted that beyond financial provision, fathers also serve as moral guides, shaping the behaviour and values of their children through discipline, integrity, hard work and patriotism.

He explained that these values remain essential for nation-building, especially at a time when the country continues to seek stronger institutions and responsible citizenship among its youth population.

According to him, the daily sacrifices made by fathers in providing protection, guidance and emotional support to their families play a major role in strengthening the social fabric of the nation.

He added that such contributions often go unnoticed, but remain critical to the stability of homes and communities across Nigeria.

The Inspector-General also used the occasion to salute officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force who are fathers, acknowledging the dual responsibility they shoulder in both service to the nation and their families.

He noted that police officers often work under demanding and risky conditions that require them to spend long hours away from their homes, yet they continue to fulfil their roles as parents and role models.

The IGP praised their resilience and commitment, describing them as examples of discipline and sacrifice both within the Force and in their private lives.

He said their ability to balance professional duties with family responsibilities reflects a deep sense of dedication to national service and personal responsibility.

The police chief further extended his goodwill to all fathers across the country, wishing them good health, strength, wisdom and fulfilment as they continue to play their roles in society.

The message comes at a time when discussions around parenting, family values and youth development continue to gain attention in Nigeria, with many stakeholders calling for stronger family structures as a foundation for national progress.

In many Nigerian communities, fathers are traditionally seen as heads of households responsible for providing direction, discipline and support. However, modern social dynamics have also highlighted the shared responsibilities of both parents in child upbringing.

The IGP’s message reflects ongoing efforts by public institutions to encourage positive family values as part of broader strategies for social stability and crime prevention.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to supporting community development initiatives that promote peace, unity and responsible citizenship.

As Father’s Day celebrations continue to resonate across the country, the police chief’s message adds to national conversations on the importance of family, responsibility and sacrifice in building a stronger Nigeria.

For many families, the day serves as an opportunity to reflect on the contributions of fathers and father figures who continue to play key roles in shaping lives and communities.
