President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has nominated Professor Abayomi Sunday Fashina as a non-career ambassador/high commissioner-designate and forwarded his name to the Senate for confirmation.

The nomination was formally announced on Wednesday during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who read a letter sent by the President to the upper legislative chamber.

In the letter, President Tinubu urged senators to consider and confirm the nominee without delay, in line with the constitutional provisions governing ambassadorial appointments in Nigeria.

According to the President, the nomination was made in accordance with the relevant sections of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.

The letter stated: “In accordance with the provisions of section 121, subsections 2, 3, and 4 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999, as amended, I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate the nomination of Professor Abayomi Sunday-Fashina as non-career ambassador/high commissioner-designate.

“Whilst I hope that the Senate will consider and confirm the nominee expeditiously, please accept distinguished Senate President and distinguished senators, the assurances of my highest consideration.”

Following the announcement, the nomination was referred to the appropriate Senate committee for further legislative action. The committee is expected to screen the nominee and submit its report to the Senate before a final decision is taken on the confirmation request.

Under Nigeria’s constitutional process, ambassadorial nominees must undergo Senate screening before they can be formally appointed and deployed to represent the country abroad. During the screening exercise, lawmakers usually assess the qualifications, experience and suitability of nominees for diplomatic responsibilities.

Professor Fashina’s nomination comes as the Tinubu administration continues efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic presence and improve the country’s engagement with the international community.

Non-career ambassadors are usually appointed from outside the regular diplomatic service. Unlike career diplomats who rise through the ranks of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, non-career ambassadors are often selected based on their professional achievements, leadership experience and contributions to national development.

Although the specific country or diplomatic mission where Professor Fashina may be posted has not yet been announced, his nomination is expected to attract attention within academic and public circles because of his background in higher education.

Nigeria’s ambassadors and high commissioners play important roles in promoting the country’s interests abroad. They are responsible for strengthening bilateral relations, encouraging trade and investment, protecting the interests of Nigerians living overseas and advancing the nation’s foreign policy objectives.

The nomination also comes at a time when the Federal Government is seeking stronger diplomatic and economic partnerships with countries across Africa, Europe, Asia and the Americas. Analysts say effective diplomatic representation remains important for attracting foreign investment, boosting trade opportunities and improving international cooperation on security and development issues.

Since assuming office in May 2023, President Tinubu has made several appointments aimed at repositioning key institutions of government. His administration has repeatedly stressed the need for competent leadership across various sectors as part of its broader governance agenda.

The Senate, which has constitutional responsibility for confirming ambassadorial nominees, is expected to begin consideration of the nomination in the coming weeks. If approved, Professor Fashina will join the list of Nigerian envoys tasked with representing the country’s interests on the global stage.
