The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has reportedly carried out a major airstrike against suspected bandits gathered along the Niger-Kaduna-Zamfara border, with security sources claiming that many of the armed criminals were killed during the operation.

According to the sources, the airstrike targeted a large gathering of suspected bandits at Dogon Dawa, where they were allegedly meeting to plan fresh attacks on nearby communities.

The operation, which reportedly took place recently, is said to have dealt a significant blow to the criminal group operating within the forests that stretch across parts of Niger, Kaduna and Zamfara states.

Security sources said intelligence gathered before the operation indicated that a large number of suspected bandits had assembled in the area. Based on the intelligence, the Nigerian Air Force was said to have launched a precision airstrike against the location.

The sources claimed that the strike hit the group while they were holding the meeting, resulting in the deaths of numerous suspected bandits.

Although the exact number of casualties could not be confirmed, the sources described the operation as successful and said it disrupted plans for attacks on vulnerable communities.

According to the report, more than 200 motorcycles were seen at the location during the operation. Armed groups operating in the North-West are known to rely heavily on motorcycles to move through forests and difficult terrain, making them difficult to track by ground forces.

The sources also said some of the suspected bandits who survived the airstrike sustained injuries and fled into nearby forests.

They reportedly escaped through the Mangwaro axis toward the forests located between Shadadi and Ma’undu, where security agencies are expected to continue surveillance and possible follow-up operations.

One of the sources praised the Nigerian Air Force for sustaining pressure on criminal groups operating in the region.

“The strike reportedly killed numerous militants as they assembled to plan attacks. Over 200 motorcycles were present at the gathering. Some survivors, reportedly wounded, fled toward the forests between Shadadi and Ma’undu via the Mangwaro axis,” the source said.

The source added that the operation demonstrated the military’s determination to take the fight directly to armed groups responsible for repeated attacks on rural communities.

Despite the claims made by the security sources, the Nigerian Air Force had not issued an official statement on the reported operation as of the time this report was filed.

The reported casualty figures also could not be independently verified, and there was no official confirmation of the number of suspected bandits killed or injured during the strike.

The lack of an official statement means the details provided by the security sources remain preliminary and may be updated when the military releases its account of the operation.

The forests around the Niger-Kaduna-Zamfara border have become major hideouts for armed groups involved in banditry, kidnapping and cattle rustling. The difficult terrain and vast forest reserves have allowed criminal gangs to establish camps and launch attacks on surrounding communities.

Residents of villages in the affected areas have suffered repeated attacks in recent years, with many people killed, abducted or forced to flee their homes. Farmers have also abandoned their farmlands in some communities due to fear of attacks, worsening food production and economic hardship.

In response, the Nigerian military has intensified both air and ground operations against bandit camps across the North-West. The Nigerian Air Force has played a key role in the campaign by carrying out intelligence-led airstrikes against identified criminal hideouts.

Military authorities have repeatedly stated that air operations are conducted based on credible intelligence and are often coordinated with ground troops to prevent armed groups from regrouping after attacks.

The latest reported strike comes as security agencies continue efforts to restore peace in areas affected by banditry and other violent crimes. The Federal Government has repeatedly pledged to strengthen military operations, improve intelligence gathering and deny criminal groups safe havens across the country.

Residents in communities near the border have continued to call for more security operations, saying regular military patrols and sustained air surveillance are needed to prevent bandits from returning after major offensives.

While many locals have welcomed reports of successful military operations, observers have also stressed the importance of official confirmation of casualty figures and operational details to ensure accurate public information.

For now, security sources maintain that the latest airstrike has weakened the activities of suspected bandits in the area, while follow-up operations are expected to continue to track down those who escaped into nearby forests.

The Nigerian Air Force is yet to issue an official statement on the reported operation, and authorities are expected to provide further details as military operations in the area continue.
