A multiple-vehicle accident involving two articulated trucks and a private car caused traffic disruption along the Gbagada corridor of Lagos on Monday, prompting an emergency response from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).

The accident occurred at the TREM inward Gbagada section of the expressway, where two cargo-laden trucks collided with a private vehicle, leading to congestion on one of the state’s busiest highways.

LASTMA confirmed the incident in a traffic update posted on its official X handle, stating that emergency teams had been deployed to the scene to manage the situation and clear the affected vehicles.

According to the agency, recovery operations commenced immediately after the crash was reported to reduce traffic build-up and restore the free flow of vehicles.

LASTMA disclosed that a tow truck had been sent to the accident scene to remove the damaged vehicles from the road.

“A tow truck has been mobilized to the location, and recovery operations are currently in progress,” the statement added.

The traffic management agency also deployed its Rescue and Recovery Unit to assist in clearing the accident scene and ensuring that traffic was effectively controlled while the operation lasted.

According to LASTMA, the rescue team was tasked with facilitating the prompt removal of the affected vehicles and coordinating traffic to minimise delays for commuters using the route.

“Additionally, the LASTMA Rescue and Recovery Unit has been deployed to the scene to facilitate prompt vehicle extrication and enforce effective traffic management,” the agency stated.

Although the agency confirmed the collision, it did not immediately disclose the cause of the accident or whether anyone was injured or killed. It also did not provide details on the extent of damage to the vehicles involved.

Motorists travelling through the Gbagada corridor were advised to exercise caution, obey traffic officials at the scene and expect delays as recovery efforts continued.

The Gbagada Expressway is one of Lagos’ major transport routes, linking several parts of the city, including Anthony, Maryland, Oshodi and the Lagos Island axis. The road often experiences heavy traffic, especially during the morning and evening rush hours, making accidents capable of causing significant disruption.

Articulated trucks frequently use the corridor to transport goods across the state and to neighbouring states. Road safety experts have repeatedly called for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations involving heavy-duty vehicles, particularly on busy urban roads.

LASTMA has continued to urge motorists to drive responsibly, maintain safe distances between vehicles and avoid excessive speeding, especially during periods of heavy traffic.
