A suspected notorious bandit, identified as Auta Yankuzo, has reportedly posted a photograph on TikTok showing a large sum of cash allegedly obtained from kidnap ransom payments, raising fresh concerns over the growing use of social media by criminal groups to display their activities.

The image, which reportedly appeared on Yankuzo’s TikTok account on Tuesday, has attracted attention online, with many Nigerians expressing outrage over the alleged display of money believed to have been collected from kidnapping victims and their families.

Although the source of the cash has not been independently verified by security agencies, the post has renewed public concern about how suspected bandits are increasingly using social media platforms to project influence, intimidate communities and publicise their activities.

The latest incident comes only days after another video surfaced online showing armed men believed to be bandits displaying large amounts of cash reportedly obtained through ransom payments.

Kidnapping for ransom has become one of Nigeria’s most serious security challenges, especially in the North-West and parts of the North-Central, where armed gangs have continued to attack villages, highways, schools and farming communities.

Over the past few years, thousands of Nigerians have been abducted by criminal groups seeking huge ransom payments from families, communities and institutions.

Many victims have been released after payments were reportedly made, while others have remained in captivity for extended periods. In some cases, abductees have lost their lives during attacks or while in captivity.

The growing wave of kidnappings has also disrupted farming activities, forced the closure of schools in some communities and displaced thousands of residents from their homes.

Several states, including Zamfara, Kaduna, Katsina, Sokoto, Kebbi, Niger and parts of Plateau, have experienced repeated attacks by armed groups operating from forests and remote settlements.

The Federal Government has continued to intensify military operations against bandits through coordinated offensives involving the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services and other security agencies.

Air strikes, ground operations and intelligence-led missions have resulted in the killing of several bandit leaders, the rescue of kidnapped victims and the destruction of criminal camps in different parts of the country.

Despite these efforts, attacks and abductions continue to be reported, with security agencies facing the challenge of tracking armed groups operating across vast forest areas and difficult terrain.

The increasing use of social media by suspected bandits has also become a source of concern for security experts.
