Security forces have rescued 16 people, including four children, who were abducted by suspected bandits in Kogi State.
The victims were rescued during a joint operation by the military, police and other security personnel after the kidnappers were tracked to an area in Dekina Local Government Area of the state.
The victims were abducted on August 9 when suspected bandits attacked commuters along the Ojuwo-Ajengo-Memarebo and Ojiwo-Itobe roads in Ofu Local Government Area.
The attack reportedly left several travellers at the mercy of the gunmen, who forced the victims away from the roads and took them into an unknown location.
The affected roads connect communities in the area and are used by residents, farmers and other travellers. Kidnapping along rural roads has remained a major security concern in parts of the country, with criminals often taking advantage of isolated routes and difficult terrain.
A security source said security agencies received information at about 11:30am on August 10 that the abducted victims had been sighted around Adumu community in Dekina Local Government Area.
The information prompted security personnel to immediately launch a search-and-rescue operation.
Troops of the 21 Battalion and personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Lugard joined forces with the Nigeria Police Force, local vigilantes and hybrid forces to locate the victims and their abductors.
The security team moved into the area and eventually located the suspected kidnappers.
A gun battle reportedly followed between the security forces and the kidnappers.
The pressure from the security personnel forced the criminals to abandon the victims and flee into the surrounding area.
The victims were subsequently rescued and moved to safety.
However, the operation was not without casualties.
One member of the hybrid forces was killed during the gun battle, while a police officer sustained injuries.
The rescued victims comprised six men, six women and four children.
They were later handed over to the Nigeria Police, Ajaokuta Division, for further action.
The police are expected to obtain information from the victims as part of efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding their abduction and identify those responsible for the attack.
The successful rescue of the victims came less than 24 hours after their reported abduction, highlighting the importance of timely intelligence and cooperation among security agencies and local communities.
