The Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service (NAQS) has postponed the publication of shortlisted candidates for its ongoing recruitment exercise, which was initially scheduled for Thursday, August 13.
The agency said the decision was taken to ensure that the recruitment process was thorough, transparent and accurate.
NAQS announced the postponement in a public notice signed by its Director of Human Resources, ACG Issaka Ahmed, and posted on its official X handle on Friday.
The agency said it was unable to release the list as scheduled because more work was required to ensure that the process met the expected standards.
“In order to ensure a thorough, transparent and accurate process, we are unable to release the list of shortlisted candidates as scheduled,” the notice stated.
The development means thousands of applicants who had been waiting to know whether they made the shortlist will have to wait for a new date.
NAQS apologised for the delay and appealed to applicants and members of the public to remain patient while the agency completes the process.
“We sincerely regret any inconvenience or uncertainty this delay may have caused and appreciate the patience, understanding and continued interest of all applicants,” the agency said.
It added that a new date for the release of the shortlist would be communicated through its official communication channels.
“All applicants and the general public are hereby notified that a new date will be communicated in due course through our official communication channels,” it stated.
The agency also advised applicants to rely only on information released through its official channels and to disregard unverified information about the recruitment exercise.
The postponement has affected the timetable earlier announced by the agency for the next stages of the recruitment process.
NAQS had initially indicated that shortlisted candidates would be published on August 13, followed by a computer-based test and interviews scheduled for August 15.
With the shortlist no longer being released on the original date, candidates will now have to wait for fresh dates for the test and interviews.
The recruitment exercise, which covers the Superintendent, Inspectorate and Assistant cadres, attracted a large number of applications from Nigerians seeking employment with the agency.
According to statistics released by NAQS on Wednesday, the exercise generated 606,928 attempted applications between the opening of the portal on July 28 and the closing date of August 10.
However, only 407,659 applications were successfully submitted.
The agency said 199,269 attempted applications were incomplete by the time the application window closed.
The figures show the high level of interest in the recruitment exercise, especially at a time when many Nigerians are seeking jobs in government agencies and other formal sectors.
The Assistant Superintendent of Quarantine II cadre, which requires applicants to possess a Higher National Diploma or bachelor’s degree, recorded the highest number of applications.
NAQS said 290,076 applications were received for the position.
The Quarantine Assistant II cadre followed with 117,177 applications.
Other categories also attracted significant interest.
The NCE category recorded 79,685 applications, while the OND category received 70,170 applications.
The Superintendent cadre, which requires a master’s degree, attracted 13,183 applications.
The figures indicate that the competition for available positions is likely to be high when the shortlist is eventually released.
The large number of applications also means that NAQS faces the challenge of carefully screening candidates to ensure that only eligible applicants move to the next stage.
The agency’s decision to delay the shortlist appears to be aimed at giving officials additional time to verify applications and ensure that the final list is accurate.
Recruitment exercises by government agencies often attract large numbers of applicants, making the screening process important to prevent errors, duplication, impersonation and the inclusion of applicants who do not meet the stated requirements.
NAQS said the decision to postpone the shortlist was specifically made in the interest of transparency and accuracy.

Applicants are therefore advised to be cautious about individuals or organisations demanding payment in return for placement or promising access to recruitment officials.
The Nigeria Agricultural Quarantine Service is responsible for preventing the introduction and spread of pests and diseases that could affect agriculture and the environment.
Its work includes the inspection and regulation of agricultural commodities moving into and out of Nigeria, as well as quarantine measures aimed at protecting crops, livestock and other agricultural resources.
The agency’s responsibilities are important to Nigeria’s agricultural sector, given the country’s dependence on farming and the movement of agricultural products across its borders.
The recruitment exercise is expected to strengthen the agency’s workforce across its various operational areas.

For the 407,659 Nigerians who successfully submitted applications, the immediate task is now to wait for the revised timetable.
