Troops of the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have intercepted a suspected arms and explosives courier with 180 units of 20mm Super Power explosives in Zamfara State.
The suspect, identified as 57-year-old Sani Umar, was arrested during a routine stop-and-search operation conducted by troops of Sector 2 on Friday, August 14, 2026.
The military said Umar was allegedly transporting the explosives from Gusau Local Government Area of Zamfara State to suspected terrorist elements operating in Jibia Local Government Area of Katsina State.
The interception came as troops continued offensive operations against terrorist groups and their support networks in Zamfara and other parts of the North-West.
According to a statement posted by the Nigerian Army on X on Saturday, the Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Lieutenant Colonel Aliyu Danja, disclosed details of the operation.
Danja said the troops were conducting routine snap checks on vehicles when they stopped Umar’s vehicle for inspection.
A search of the vehicle reportedly led to the discovery of the explosives, after which the suspect was arrested.
“The suspect, vehicle and recovered explosives are currently in custody for further investigation,” the military said.
The arrest is significant because security agencies have continued to focus on the supply routes used by terrorist and criminal groups to obtain weapons, ammunition and explosives.
The military said the latest interception was part of efforts to disrupt not only terrorist fighters but also the logistics networks that support their activities.
The North-West has faced years of insecurity involving terrorist groups, bandits, kidnappers and other criminal elements. Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna, Sokoto and Kebbi have been among the states affected by attacks on communities, abductions, cattle rustling and other crimes.
Security agencies have consequently increased patrols, road checks and offensive operations in areas identified as routes used by armed groups.
The interception of the explosives courier came alongside another military operation in Birnin Magaji Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
According to the Army, troops were simultaneously conducting offensive operations against terrorist elements in the area when they engaged a group of terrorists around Garin Kaso.
The encounter reportedly resulted in a fierce exchange of gunfire, during which two suspected terrorists were killed.
The troops also recovered two rifles, two magazines, nine rounds of ammunition and two motorcycles from the terrorists.
The military said the operation did not end with the first encounter, as another group of terrorists later attempted to ambush the troops from concealed positions.
The soldiers, however, repelled the attack and inflicted further casualties on the terrorists.
The surviving terrorists were forced to flee the area, according to the military.
The exact number of casualties suffered by the terrorists in the second encounter could not immediately be confirmed.
However, the military said reports from members of the affected communities indicated that the fleeing terrorists evacuated several wounded colleagues as well as the bodies of some of those killed during the encounters.
The Army did not provide details of any casualty among its personnel in the operations.
The latest operations reflect the military’s continuing strategy of targeting terrorist groups at different levels, including their fighters, hideouts, weapons supplies and logistics networks.
The recovery of explosives is particularly important to the security forces because explosive devices can be used in attacks on military positions, security personnel, public infrastructure and civilian communities.
Terrorist and criminal groups operating in the North-West have in the past used firearms and explosives to attack security forces and intimidate communities.
By intercepting suspected couriers and cutting off supplies, security agencies aim to weaken the ability of such groups to carry out attacks and maintain their operations.
Operation FANSAN YAMMA is one of the military operations established to coordinate efforts against terrorism and other forms of insecurity in the North-West.
The operation covers areas affected by armed groups and seeks to disrupt their activities while restoring security to communities.
The military has increasingly combined offensive operations with intelligence gathering, road checks and other measures aimed at identifying the movement of terrorists and their suppliers.
The interception of Umar is believed to be part of this broader approach.
Although the military did not say how long Umar had allegedly been involved in transporting explosives or whether he had previously delivered similar items, his arrest could assist investigators in tracing the source and intended recipients of the explosives.
The Army said the suspect and the recovered items remained in custody for further investigation.
Security authorities are expected to investigate the origin of the explosives, the intended recipients and the network through which the items were being transported.
Such investigations could also help security agencies identify other individuals involved in the movement of weapons and explosives to terrorist groups.
The military’s operation in Birnin Magaji also demonstrated the continued presence of armed groups in some rural parts of Zamfara despite ongoing security operations.
The attack around Garin Kaso and the subsequent attempted ambush showed that troops remain vulnerable to attacks while operating in difficult terrain and areas where terrorists can use concealed positions.
The military said, however, that its troops were able to repel the attacks and force the terrorists to withdraw.
The recovery of rifles, ammunition and motorcycles could also limit the operational capacity of the group involved in the encounter.
Motorcycles are often used by armed groups operating in remote communities because they allow them to move quickly through difficult terrain and escape security forces.
The military’s seizure of such equipment is therefore part of efforts to reduce the mobility of terrorist and criminal groups.
The Theatre Command of Operation FANSAN YAMMA said the latest operations demonstrated its sustained offensive posture against terrorist elements across the North-West.
The command said it would continue to target both terrorist enclaves and the logistics networks supplying them with weapons and explosives.
It also pledged to intensify operations aimed at denying terrorists and other criminal groups freedom of action across the region.
The command said the objective remained to disrupt terrorist activities and create a safer environment for residents.
The operations also underline the importance of cooperation between security forces and local communities. Reports from residents about wounded terrorists and the evacuation of bodies provided additional information about the outcome of the encounters.
Security agencies have repeatedly urged residents in affected areas to provide useful information on the movement of armed groups and suspicious persons.
The military’s latest operations come as governments in the North-West continue to seek an end to years of insecurity that have disrupted farming, trade, education and other economic activities.
Many rural communities have been forced to change their daily activities because of attacks and fear of abductions.
The continued military pressure on terrorist groups is therefore aimed not only at reducing attacks but also at creating conditions for residents to return to their normal lives.
With the arrest of the suspected explosives courier and the killing of two terrorists, Operation FANSAN YAMMA said it would sustain its operations against terrorist groups and their support networks.
The Theatre Command maintained that its forces would continue offensive actions to disrupt criminal activities and deny terrorists and other armed groups the freedom to operate across the North-West.
