Akwa Ibom Suspends Principal Amid Investigation Into Boarding Schools’ Poor Feeding Conditions

The Akwa Ibom State government has suspended the principal of the Presbyterian Senior Science School, Ididep (PSSSI), after a viral video exposed the appalling feeding conditions at the school’s hostel.

The disturbing video, shared online by human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong, showed students being served a meager and unappetizing meal consisting of watery soup with solid food. The footage immediately sparked widespread outrage and condemnation on social media, with many Nigerians expressing disbelief at the poor quality of food being served to the students.

Effiong, who verified the authenticity of the video, took to social media to denounce the inhumane treatment of the students. “Even dogs shouldn’t be fed that kind of food,” he said, calling for immediate action by the state government. He also compared the dining hall to a concentration camp, emphasizing the poor state of the facilities and food.

The video went viral, drawing significant public attention and prompting calls for the Akwa Ibom State government to intervene.

In response to the outcry, the state Commissioner for Education, Idongesit Etiebet, issued a statement confirming the suspension of the principal, Dr. Nse Sunday Umoh. “I have directed a comprehensive investigation into the state of boarding facilities in the school and the other 25 boarding secondary schools across the state,” Etiebet said. The investigation will examine all aspects of the school’s facilities, including hostels, dining halls, kitchens, and sanitary conditions.

“We will ensure that all public school facilities meet minimum standards that uphold the well-being of both students and staff,” Etiebet added.

The commissioner also revealed that an unscheduled visit was made to the Presbyterian Senior Science School to assess the situation firsthand. This visit was prompted by students’ complaints of malnutrition, despite paying a large amount for boarding fees.

“The welfare and dignity of our students remain a top priority for the Umo Eno-led administration,” Etiebet said, referring to the current governor of Akwa Ibom State. “The government remains committed to ensuring that all public school facilities are of the highest standard.”

The governor’s office has also acknowledged the significant burden that parents bear in sending their children to boarding schools. Although the state provides free education covering tuition fees, parents are still required to pay for boarding, which is meant to cover meals, accommodation, and other essential services. The governor has urged parents to support their children in fulfilling these responsibilities.

However, despite these financial contributions, the viral video has raised questions about how the funds are being managed and whether students are receiving the quality of care they deserve.

Effiong’s video not only highlights the poor food being served but also sheds light on the broader issues within the public school system in Akwa Ibom. Many parents and observers have criticized the state government for allowing such conditions to persist in schools, particularly when students are supposed to be receiving a standard of care that ensures their well-being.

In the aftermath of the public outcry, Akwa Ibom’s Ministry of Education has pledged to conduct a thorough review of the entire state’s boarding schools. This review will include an assessment of the schools’ hostels, dining halls, recreational areas, and sanitary facilities. The Permanent Secretaries of the Ministry of Education and the State Secondary Education Board will oversee the investigation.
