The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) chapter, has accused the Vice Chancellor, Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina, of sexual harassment and creating a hostile environment for staff.
In a statement issued on Monday, SSANU called for an immediate probe into the Vice Chancellor’s tenure, alleging administrative recklessness, intimidation, and financial mismanagement.
The union claimed that the actions of Prof. Fasina had eroded confidence in the university’s leadership and created an unsafe atmosphere for workers.
According to the statement, the allegations include sexual harassment of union members, victimization of staff involved in union activities, and a lack of accountability in university operations.
“A Culture of Intimidation”
SSANU revealed that members who spoke up against the administration were intimidated and sidelined.
The union accused Prof. Fasina of systematically undermining staff morale, creating divisions, and using his position to target those who challenged his authority.
Benjamin Faleye, the SSANU Chairman, alleged, “The Vice Chancellor has turned FUOYE into his personal kingdom, where dissent is met with harassment and victimization.”
Faleye further stated that many staff members had been “forced into silence” due to fear of retaliation.
Financial Mismanagement Allegations
The union also raised concerns over the management of university funds.
It called for a comprehensive review of the institution’s financial records during Fasina’s administration.
SSANU insisted that transparency and accountability were necessary to restore confidence in the institution’s operations.
“We cannot sit back and watch the university’s resources being mismanaged,” said Ayomikun Aluke, SSANU Secretary.
Demands for Governing Council Intervention
SSANU urged the university’s Governing Council to act decisively to address the issues.
The union demanded the immediate reversal of teaching staff appointments to non-teaching roles, describing the practice as a breach of standard university operations.
It also called for the payment of outstanding staff allowances, which it said had been delayed for far too long.
“Our members are suffering due to poor administrative decisions and the refusal to implement the Governing Council’s directives,” Faleye added.
A Split in Perceptions
While SSANU called for urgent action, other staff unions have defended Prof. Fasina.
A coalition of unions dismissed the allegations as baseless, speculative, and politically motivated.
Dr. Wale Balogun, the Vice Chancellor’s Special Adviser on Media, shared a statement from the coalition, asserting that the accusations lacked credible evidence.
“This is a calculated attempt to tarnish the Vice Chancellor’s reputation,” the statement read.
Union Praises Former Pro-Chancellor
SSANU also commended the efforts of the former Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Engr. K. O. Ojo, for his transparency and commitment to institutional growth.
“We deeply appreciate Engr. Ojo’s leadership during his tenure,” said Simeon Olausi, SSANU Vice Chairman.
The union urged the university’s current management to emulate Ojo’s approach to governance.
Call for Transparency
The union reiterated its commitment to fighting for staff welfare and institutional integrity.
“We want an independent investigation into these allegations,” Faleye said.
He added that a thorough probe would help address grievances and restore a harmonious working environment.
An Urgent Appeal to Authorities
SSANU called on the Nigerian government, university regulatory bodies, and relevant authorities to intervene swiftly.
The union emphasized the need for action to safeguard the welfare of staff and students.
“The future of FUOYE depends on decisive action to address these allegations,” Aluke stated.
