The Federation of Anti-Graft Organisations has called for the immediate and uncompromising prosecution of former Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, following his arrest by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Bello, who governed Kogi State from 2015 to 2023, was apprehended on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, after months of evading arrest.

He faces charges of money laundering, breach of trust, and misappropriation of N80.2 billion.

    EFCC Commended for “Long-Awaited” Arrest

The Federation praised the EFCC for finally apprehending Bello, who had been on the commission’s wanted list since April 2024.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the group’s Convener, Comrade Kolawole Emmanuel, expressed satisfaction with the arrest.

“This arrest is a victory for justice and accountability,” Emmanuel said.

The statement, co-signed by Secretary Chisom Obioha, outlined a series of demands to ensure Bello’s prosecution is handled with utmost transparency and fairness.

    Demands for Strict Legal Measures

The Federation listed ten key demands, emphasizing that Bello must be treated like any other arrested criminal.

    Among their demands are:

    1. No plea bargain should be allowed.
    2. No administrative bail should be granted.
    3. EFCC must oppose any bail applications in court.

    5. Bello’s mugshot should be taken and publicly released.
    6. All his bank accounts should be frozen to prevent further financial misconduct.

The group also insisted that Bello be placed in solitary confinement to avoid any external influence.

“No presidential pardon should be considered under any circumstances,” they added.

    Calls for Accountability and Justice

The Federation stressed that Bello’s prosecution should be thorough and professional.

They warned against any form of interference in the judicial process.

“We call for a fair trial that will serve as a deterrent to others who may engage in corrupt practices,” Emmanuel said.

The organisation urged the EFCC to arrest Bello’s former aides who may have aided in the alleged crimes.

“All those involved must face the full weight of the law,” the group demanded.

    Threat of Nationwide Protests

The Anti-Graft Federation did not mince words about its readiness to take action if Bello is released.

“If any attempt is made to release Yahaya Bello under any circumstances, we will hit the streets with massive protests against the EFCC and the Federal Government,” Emmanuel declared.

They also announced plans for a World Press Conference to discuss the case further.

Nigerians, the group said, should expect a more comprehensive statement soon.

    A History of Allegations

Yahaya Bello’s arrest marks a significant development in Nigeria’s ongoing fight against corruption.

The former governor had been accused of financial misconduct during his tenure, with allegations of mismanaging public funds.

In April 2024, the EFCC declared him wanted after investigations linked him to the misappropriation of N80.2 billion.

“We stand with the EFCC in this fight for justice,” Obioha added.
