Nigerian rapper Speed Darlington, also known as Darlington Okoye, has been arrested once again.
The controversial artist was taken into custody on Tuesday night while performing at a show in Owerri, the Imo State capital.
Human rights lawyer and the rapper’s counsel, Deji Adeyanju, confirmed the arrest.
Adeyanju shared the news on his official X (formerly Twitter) page, expressing concern over the rapper’s continuous run-ins with the law.
ARREST DRAMA UNFOLDS AT SHOW
The arrest reportedly occurred just days after Speed Darlington returned to Nigeria.
Fans who had gathered for his performance were left in shock as police officers interrupted the show.
“Our client, Speed Darlington, a.k.a AKPI, has been arrested by the Nigeria Police in Owerri at his show upon return to Nigeria,” Adeyanju posted.
Videos circulating online show the rapper being escorted off the stage in handcuffs, leaving many fans outraged.
LEGAL TROUBLES PERSIST
This marks the second time in two months that Speed Darlington has been detained by Nigerian authorities.
On October 4, he was arrested in Lagos over a viral video in which he allegedly defamed popular singer Burna Boy.
In the video, Speed Darlington accused Burna Boy of benefiting from a connection with American rapper Diddy.
The accusations sparked widespread controversy, prompting the police to act.
He was transferred from Lagos to Abuja, where he was held by the Inspector General of Police’s Intelligence Response Team.
The rapper spent five days in detention before being released on bail on October 9.
FANS EXPRESS OUTRAGE
Fans of the artist have taken to social media to express their frustration and disappointment.
“This is harassment! Let Speed Darlington live his life,” one user wrote.
Another added, “He just came back to Nigeria, and now this? Something isn’t right.”
Speed Darlington, known for his eccentric personality and bold statements, has gained a cult following both in Nigeria and abroad.
WHY IS SPEED DARLINGTON TARGETED?
Many believe Speed Darlington’s outspoken nature has made him a target.
He often criticizes other artists and public figures, which has landed him in trouble multiple times.
“He speaks his mind, and that’s why they keep coming for him,” a fan commented.
Others, however, argue that his antics sometimes cross the line.
THE BURNA BOY FEUD
The feud with Burna Boy seems to be the root of his current legal issues.
In the controversial video, Speed Darlington accused Burna Boy of exploiting connections for fame.
“I regret targeting Davido; Burna Boy was the real focus,” he later admitted.
Legal experts have pointed out that defamation cases in Nigeria can carry serious consequences.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
Deji Adeyanju has vowed to fight for his client’s release.
He described the arrest as unjust and unnecessary, insisting that Speed Darlington is being unfairly treated.
“This is persecution, not justice,” Adeyanju said.
The lawyer revealed plans to challenge the arrest in court.
He also appealed to fans and human rights groups to support the rapper.
A HISTORY OF CONTROVERSY
Speed Darlington’s career has been marked by controversy.
From calling out fellow artists to engaging in online spats, he thrives on attention.
Despite his legal troubles, the rapper remains unapologetic.
In a recent interview, he stated, “I am who I am. Love me or hate me.”
IMPACT ON HIS CAREER
Some fear that these repeated arrests could harm his career.
Music analyst Tunde Adesina believes the rapper’s brand might suffer if the legal battles continue.
“Fans love drama, but too much legal trouble can scare off sponsors and collaborators,” Adesina said.
However, others think the controversies could boost his popularity.
“In the entertainment world, any publicity is good publicity,” media consultant Aisha Bello noted.
