Ekiti 2026: Anyone Can Contest But I Am Backing Oyebanji – Fayemi

    Share

The political landscape in Ekiti State is heating up as the 2026 gubernatorial race draws closer. Former Governor Dr. Kayode Fayemi has formally endorsed the re-election bid of the incumbent Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, highlighting his exceptional performance over the past two years. This declaration, made during a gathering of All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders in Isan Ekiti, signals the beginning of what is expected to be an intense race for the APC ticket.

Despite his endorsement, Fayemi maintained that the party’s internal democracy remains intact, encouraging other aspirants to throw their hats into the ring.

    “We Are For Oyebanji”

Speaking to a crowd of over 5,000 APC leaders from across the state’s 16 local government areas, Fayemi said, “As for me and my entire family, we are for Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji’s second term in office. He is an Omoluabi who has performed exceedingly well, and we believe supporting him is the best choice for Ekiti people.”

The former governor, known for his democratic principles, stressed that his endorsement does not preclude others from vying for the ticket. “I am a democrat, and I cannot discourage anybody from contesting. Anyone who feels capable should go ahead. During my time, I contested against dozens of aspirants, and that robust process strengthened our party.”

Fayemi further urged party leaders to begin mobilizing support at the grassroots level, emphasizing that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would soon announce the election timeline.

    A Resounding Endorsement

Fayemi’s declaration was met with enthusiastic applause, reflecting his enduring influence within the party. The gathering, described as a mix of an end-of-year celebration and a strategy session, also saw party leaders affirming their support for Governor Oyebanji’s leadership.

    Oyebanji Expresses Gratitude

In response, Governor Oyebanji expressed deep appreciation for Fayemi’s public endorsement. Referring to Fayemi as his “boss, mentor, and benefactor,” Oyebanji pledged to continue the good work that has earned his administration widespread praise.

“When you made me Secretary to the State Government (SSG) in 2018, I vowed to make you proud. In 2021, when you endorsed me as the party’s flagbearer, I made the same promise. I believe I have kept my word through policies and programs that have brought joy to our people,” Oyebanji said.

He assured the gathering of his commitment to upholding the party’s ideals and strengthening its appeal among Ekiti voters. “No single person has left our party for another, and we continue to attract members from other political parties. This unity and growth reflect our collective achievements,” he added.

    Party Leaders Laud Oyebanji’s Administration

Leaders from across Ekiti’s three senatorial districts and local government chapters took turns to commend Governor Oyebanji’s administration. They cited significant strides in governance, infrastructure, and service delivery as reasons for their unwavering support.

“Governor Oyebanji has redefined governance in Ekiti State,” one party leader remarked. “His administration has prioritized the welfare of the people, making the APC the most trusted party in the state.”

The meeting featured a star-studded lineup of political heavyweights, including the Deputy Governor, Chief Monisade Afuye; Acting State Chairman of the APC, Sola Elesin; Speaker of the State Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adeoye Aribasoye; and the chairman of the party’s elders caucus.

The presence of state assembly members, council chairpersons, and local government representatives underscored the event’s significance as a rallying point for party unity.

    The Road Ahead

While Fayemi’s endorsement has bolstered Oyebanji’s prospects, the former governor’s call for open competition suggests the APC is keen on maintaining internal democracy. Analysts believe this approach could strengthen the party by fostering healthy competition and ensuring the emergence of a strong candidate.

However, the endorsement also raises questions about potential contenders and their strategies moving forward. Will they challenge Oyebanji head-on, or will Fayemi’s influence deter serious opposition within the party?
